Article Synopsis
  • There is no universal definition of cognition, leading to varied perspectives on what constitutes cognitive systems and processes.
  • Cognition is a collection of interconnected processes such as perception, memory, and problem-solving, which all organisms engage in to navigate their environments.
  • An evolutionary approach highlights both the commonalities and differences in cognitive processes across species, suggesting that understanding these basic processes can expand our definition of cognition to include all living beings.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving therapy in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Hemostatic complications are frequently observed in patients on ECMO and limit the success of this therapy. Platelets are key mediators of hemostasis enabling activation, aggregation, and thrombus formation by coming in contact with exposed matrix proteins via their surface receptors such as glycoprotein (GP) VI or GPIb/V/IX.

Erythrocytes undergo a well-defined switch from fetal to postnatal circulation, which is mainly reflected by the stage-specific expression of hemoglobin chains. Perinatal alterations in thrombopoiesis are poorly understood. We assessed the ontogenesis of platelet phenotype and function from early prematurity to adulthood.

Background: The blood supply for patients with foreign ethnic backgrounds can be challenging, as they often have blood group and HPA patterns that differ from the variants prevalent in the German population. In addition, hemoglobinopathies requiring regular blood transfusion may be more common in such populations. High-throughput genotyping tests can facilitate the identification of the most compatible blood products, thereby reducing the risk of transfusion reactions.
