Primary aldosteronism prevalence enhanced by strict adherence to 2016 Endocrine Society guidelines: insights from an endocrine hypertension unit.

Introduction: Primary aldosteronism is the most frequent cause of hypertension although is undetected. The 2016 Endocrine Society guidelines (2016-ESG) recommendations for primary aldosteronism detection are unfulfilled. We aimed to ascertain the prevalence of primary aldosteronism, following the screening criteria endorsed by the 2016-ESG.

Smoking influence on early and late fetal growth.

Objectives: Smoking during pregnancy is a leading and modifiable risk factor for fetal growth restriction (FGR) and low birthweight (<10th centile). We studied the effects of smoking in the development of early and late FGR or low birthweight, as well as in uteroplacental and fetoplacental hemodynamics of growth-restricted fetuses.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 5,537 consecutive singleton pregnancies delivered at ≤34 + 0 ("early delivery" group, n=95) and >34 + 0 ("late delivery" group, n=5,442) weeks of gestation.

Intestinal giardiasis in children: Five years' experience in a reference unit.

Background: Giardiasis is highly prevalent in children and is often mildly symptomatic. First-line treatment is metronidazole, but treatment failure is not uncommon. We describe a paediatric series, to identify risk factors for treatment failure and to analyse the safety and effectiveness of other treatment strategies.
