Objectives: Pulmonary infections and bacteraemia, essentially due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, are frequently reported in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We retrospectively analyzed episodes of bacteraemia in HIV-infected patients to determine whether supplementary risk factors could be ascertained and whether it would be advisable to propose vaccination.
Methods: From June 1986 to February 1992, 41 episodes of bacteraemia in 30 HIV-infected patients were observed in 7 different wards.
