The objective of the study was to determine the diagnostic value for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) of anti-filaggrin autoantibodies (autoAb) recognizing citrullinated recombinant rat filaggrin (ACRF) in community cases of very early arthritis. To evaluate the diagnostic value of ACRF, were studied sera from patients with different classified rheumatic diseases and healthy subjects (group 1, n= 422) and 314 community cases of very early arthritis (group 2) that were classified as RA (n = 176), non-RA (n = 63) and undifferentiated (n = 75) arthritides after 1 years of follow-up. ACRF were measured using a new ELISA, with results expressed as the difference between the OD value obtained on citrullinated minus that on noncitrullinated rat filaggrin (differential ACRF; dACRF).

Magnetically recoverable, semipermeable microcapsules have been devised for covalent entrapment of reactive substances in the intestinal cavity to biomonitor potentially DNA-damaging agents and the effects of etiologically important components of the human diet. These microcapsules have been shown to trap five types of agents in vivo, namely, carcinogen electrophiles, nitrosating agents, mutagens/carcinogens having a planar molecular structure, and as-yet unidentified endogenous cross-linking agents and precursors of reactive oxygen species. Substantial alterations in both total metabolites and types of metabolites trapped from [14C]benzo(a)pyrene were found to be caused by increasing (within the human intake range) the dietary levels of beef protein and dietary fiber.

Immunological studies were designed to study the structure of the oligomycin sensitivity conferring protein (OSCP) integrated in the mitochondrial ATPase-ATPsynthase complex. The monoclonal antibody 2B1B1 used in this study could bind as well to purified or membrane bound OSCP as shown previously by Protein A-gold immunocytochemistry and by competitive immunotitration. In this paper, it is shown that 2B1B1 can also immunoprecipitate the F0F1 complex from a Triton X-100 extract.
