The mechanism of carbon nanomaterial formation at moderate temperatures while processing fresh-reduced iron by products of air conversion of natural gas is considered. It is shown that under given conditions, the size and the shape of the resulting carbon are dependent on the temperature and the size of microscopic iron grains formed during reduction. These iron grains are the catalyzer of the reaction of carbon monoxide disproportionation.

Functional activity of circulating phagocytes (macrophages--Ms and neutrophils--Ns) was studied in 30 patients with infiltrative (I) and 30 patients with fibro-cavernous (FC) pulmonary tuberculosis (PT). Difference of the functional activity of both types of cells depending on the PT form was revealed: more significant increase in the oxygen-depending activity in FCPT while bactericide potential estimated with a zymosane induced NST-test was more pronounced in IPT patients. These data correlate with the blood levels of neopterin and elastase, the markers of the M and N activity, respectively.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) develops after cessation of alcohol intake in alcoholic patients characterizing psychiatric symptoms and changes in autonomous nervous systems. We studied cardiovascular changes during different phases of AWS (1, 2, 3 and 10 days after admission for detoxification; n=34) and compared them with those in early recovery (at least 1 month of abstinence; n=30). The results study showed that cardiovascular system underwent significant changes during AWS characterizing the decrease of heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and total peripheral resistance.

Aims: We studied whether verapamil, a Ca2+ channel blocker, affects cardiovascular symptoms in alcohol withdrawal.

Methods: Cardiovascular effects of verapamil (5 mg intravenously) were compared in 20 alcohol-dependent subjects during alcohol withdrawal (n = 10) on days 1, 2 and 10 and during early recovery (n = 10; duration 45 +/- 4.1 days).

The cardiovascular effects of the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol (40 mg) were compared in 20 alcohol-dependent subjects during alcohol withdrawal syndrome (WS; n=10) on days 1, 2, 3, and 10 to those during remission (n=10; 50 +/- 7.7 days). Significant differences were observed in negative chronotropic and hypotensive effects during withdrawal compared to remission.
