Unplanned hospitalizations in patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck cancer treated with (chemo)radiotherapy with and without prophylactic percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

Background: Current studies about percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement report equivalent patient outcomes with prophylactic PEG tubes (pPEGs) versus common nutritional support. Unreported was if omitting a pPEG is associated with an increased risk of complications leading to a treatment-related unplanned hospitalization (TRUH).

Methods: TRUHs were retrospectively analyzed in patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (n = 310) undergoing (chemo)radiotherapy with (pPEG) or without PEG (nPEG).

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in patients with obesity. Diagnosing GERD is important as bariatric operations have different influence on GERD. We assessed reflux symptoms and objective findings prior to surgery.

Successful Treatment of Small Intestinal Bleeding in a Crohn's Patient with Noncirrhotic Portal Hypertension by Transjugular Portosystemic Shunt Placement and Infliximab Treatment.

Small intestinal bleeding in Crohn's disease patients with noncirrhotic portal hypertension and partial portal and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis is a life-threatening event. Here, a case is reported in which treatment with azathioprine may have resulted in nodular regenerative hyperplasia, portal hypertension and portal vein thrombosis. The 56-year-old patient with Crohn's disease developed nodular regenerative hyperplasia under treatment with azathioprine.

[Spontaneous hematomas and isolated prolongation of aPTT].

We report a case of a 64 year old woman with spontaneous hematomas. A prior history of bleeding disorder was not known up to now. The result of investigation of coagulation was an isolated prolonged aPTT that was caused by an inhibitor of factor VIII without underlying disease (idiopathic acquired hemophilia A).

[Fever and dysphagia of a young woman].

We report the case of a 39-year old patient with septicemia treated for pharyngitis with antibiotics since a few days. She wasn't able to swallow her antibiotics anymore because of dysphagia. Radiologic examination revealed pulmonary infiltrates and Vena iugularis interna-thrombosis.
