This study has found low 24-h urine volumes in British expatriates in Saudi Arabia and suggests the possibility of urate stone formation in spite of the air-conditioned environment in which they were living. Urine volume was shown to be significantly correlated with calcium excretion in both sexes and to urate and sodium in males. Differences in 24-h urine concentrations of some but not all constituents between British-born subjects living in Britain and Saudi Arabia have been demonstrated.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAt least four out of 97 low birth weight (less than 1750 g) newborn infants who had received only limited skin disinfection with 3% hexachlorophane (HCP) emulsion developed spongioform myelinopathy in association with detectable amounts of HCP in their brains. These four cases were found in a post-mortem survey of 20 out of the 27 infants who died. Another nine of these infants had detectable amounts of HCP in the brain but no myelinopathy.

Doses of the anabolic steroid, methandrostenolone, nearly ten times greater than those used therapeutically, have resulted in a marked depression of levels of testosterone in urine and blood, and in some depression of gonadotrophin excretion by a male athlete. The administration of the drug has been checked and its metabolism studied from the pattern of urinary metabolites.
