New hematopoietic cell models have recently emerged through immortalization of CD34 cells to study and understand various molecular mechanisms of erythropoiesis. Here, we characterize the JK-1 CML-derived cell line, previously shown to spontaneously differentiate without cytokines. Using an epigenetic differentiation inhibitor that keeps JK-1 in an early differentiation phase, we characterized 2 progenitor stages: BFU-E JK-1 and CFU-E JK-1 with CD34+/CD36- and CD34-/CD36 + phenotypes respectively.

Sustained clinical benefit of malaria chemoprevention with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) in pregnant women in a region with high SP resistance markers.

Objective: The effectiveness of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) is threatened by increasing SP-resistance in Africa. We assessed the level of SP-resistance markers, and the clinical and parasitological effectiveness of IPTp-SP in southern Mozambique.

Placental malaria vaccines (PMVs) are being developed to prevent severe sequelae of placental malaria (PM) in pregnant women and their offspring. The leading candidate vaccine antigen VAR2CSA mediates parasite binding to placental receptor chondroitin sulfate A (CSA). Despite promising results in small animal studies, recent human trials of the first two PMV candidates (PAMVAC and PRIMVAC) generated limited cross-reactivity and cross-inhibitory activity to heterologous parasites.
