Diphtheria in two Nigerian Hospitals: What is New and the Implications for Control.

We recorded three cases of faucial Diphtheria in two Nigerian hospitals between 2021 and 2022. Hitherto, no infections were documented in these hospitals in the prior ten years. All infected children missed their routine childhood vaccinations and presented with reduced feeding, a bull neck and a light yellowish throat or tonsillar pseudo-membrane.

Outcome of short-term emergency department observation care of children with sickle cell disease and vaso-occlusive crises: initial experience from south-western Nigeria.

Background: Short-term emergency department (ED) observation care may prevent prolonged and unnecessary hospital admission in patients with sickle pain. This study highlights the outcomes of short-term ED care of acute pain in children with sickle cell disease (SCD).

Methods: Children aged 6 mo to 19 y with SCD and painful crises who were managed by short-term ED care from July 2017 to June 2019 were studied retrospectively.

Carpopedal spasm in a 4 year old boy with persisted vomiting and dyselectrolytemia in Wesley Guild Hospital Ilesa.

Carpopedal spasm have various causes ranging from dsyselecrolytemia, syndromic, metabolic or endocrine causes. Any of these could cause a decrease in ionized calcium and tetany. Excessive vomiting leading to alkalosis, hypokaleamia and decreased ionised calcium should be kept in mind for early etiological diagnosis of carpopedal spasm.

Prevalence and factors associated with exercise-induced bronchospasm among rural school children in Ilesa, Nigeria.

Background: Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) assessed using changes in peak expiratory flow rates (PEFRs) to free range exercise is a relatively cheap way of screening for asthma in resource-poor centres where children with asthma are often undiagnosed and poorly managed. This study sets out to determine the prevalence and factors associated with EIB among rural schoolchildren in Ilesa, Nigeria.

Subjects And Methods: Children aged 8-16 years from two middle schools in rural Ilesa were selected by multistage sampling.

Utility of PTEN expression of endometrial "surface epithelial changes" and underlying atypical endometrial hyperplasia.

Surface epithelial changes (SECs) have been reported to be associated with endometrial carcinoma in about 49% of cases. They have also been seen to be associated with endometrial hyperplasia. Although morphologically benign, these lesions are considered a marker for underlying malignancy.
