Methanogen activity and microbial diversity in Gulf of Cádiz mud volcano sediments.

The Gulf of Cádiz is a tectonically active continental margin with over sixty mud volcanoes (MV) documented, some associated with active methane (CH) seepage. However, the role of prokaryotes in influencing this CH release is largely unknown. In two expeditions (MSM1-3 and JC10) seven Gulf of Cádiz MVs (Porto, Bonjardim, Carlos Ribeiro, Captain Arutyunov, Darwin, Meknes, and Mercator) were analyzed for microbial diversity, geochemistry, and methanogenic activity, plus substrate amended slurries also measured potential methanogenesis and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM).

The breastfeeding and early motherhood experiences of older first-time mothers: A constructivist grounded theory study.

Objective: The objective of this paper is to present the results of a qualitative study that explored the factors surrounding decision-making related to breastfeeding and the experiences of early motherhood for 23 first-time mothers over the age of 35 in Canada. Previous studies on breastfeeding have not examined older first-time mothers as a group that is unique due to their experience of coming to motherhood in the context of the growing phenomenon of delayed childbearing in the 21st century. Many older women come to motherhood with both well- established life and professional experiences, and as such their needs may differ from their younger or multiparous counterparts.

Amygdala, neuropeptides, and chronic pain-related affective behaviors.

Neuropeptides play important modulatory roles throughout the nervous system, functioning as direct effectors or as interacting partners with other neuropeptide and neurotransmitter systems. Limbic brain areas involved in learning, memory and emotions are particularly rich in neuropeptides. This review will focus on the amygdala, a limbic region that plays a key role in emotional-affective behaviors and pain modulation.

Active and diverse viruses persist in the deep sub-seafloor sediments over thousands of years.

Viruses are ubiquitous and cause significant mortality in marine bacterial and archaeal communities. Little is known about the role of viruses in the sub-seafloor biosphere, which hosts a large fraction of all microbes on Earth. We quantified and characterized viruses in sediments from the Baltic Sea.

Roles, processes, and outcomes of interprofessional shared decision-making in a neonatal intensive care unit: A qualitative study.

Shared decision-making provides an opportunity for the knowledge and skills of care providers to synergistically influence patient care. Little is known about interprofessional shared decision-making processes in critical care settings. The aim of this study was to explore interprofessional team members' perspectives about the nature of interprofessional shared decision-making in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to determine if there are any differences in perspectives across professional groups.
