Excessive metabolic and cardiopulmonary stresses for everyday tasks could hinder rehabilitative efforts and be hazardous for certain patients. Sources of stress include: the relatively small musculature used for propulsion; architectural barriers; low levels of physical fitness; and inefficient wheelchair design.
