The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is threatened with extinction throughout its distribution in the neotropical forests. In the Atlantic Forest, deforestation has reduced the number of suitable habitats, with only a few remnant forest fragments hosting active nests; currently, the only known nests in this region are in the Central Atlantic Forest Ecological Corridor (CAFEC), in Brazil. Little is known about Harpy Eagle diets in this region, despite this information being essential for developing effective conservation strategies.

Background: The retrospective cancer incidence study carried out around the municipal solid waste incinerator of Gilly-sur-Isère (Savoie, France) was ordered in a context of crisis during its closing in the late 2001. Its purpose was to determine whether or not there was an excessive number of cancers around the incinerator. In the absence of cancer registry in Savoie, this study consisted in counting as exhaustively as possible the cancers that occurred between 1994 and 2002 in the study area, which was exposed to the atmospheric fallouts from the incinerator.

The authors carried out a pilot study in Clermont-Ferrand (France) over the period from 2000 to 2001 to analyze the short-term relationship between daily variations in rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis and daily variations in pollen counts. Data from the ERASME database made it possible to identify all the individuals for whom at least one drug was prescribed to treat rhinitis or allergic conjunctivitis. Ten allergenic pollens were studied, and a Poisson regression model with penalized spline functions was used.

Background: Children exposure to lead, even at low doses, can induce neurobehavioral and cognitive effects. In France, a consensus conference about lead poisoning in children has recently stated that exposure near an industrial site was a priority for blood lead screening. Selection criteria for industrial sites have therefore to be defined, especially because screening for lead poisoning requires a blood lead sample, that is an invasive procedure.
