Anaerobic technologies with downstream autotrophic nitrogen removal have been proposed to enhance bioenergy recovery and transform a wastewater treatment plant from an energy consumer to an energy exporter. However, approximately 20-50 % of the produced methane is dissolved in the anaerobically treated effluent and is easily stripped into the atmosphere in the downstream aerobic process, contributing to the release of greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to develop a solution to beneficially utilize dissolved methane to support high-level nitrogen removal from anaerobically treated mainstream wastewater.

DNA-based monitoring of microbial communities that are responsible for the performance of anaerobic digestion of sewage wastes has the potential to improve resource recoveries for wastewater treatment facilities. By treating sludge with propidium monoazide (PMA) prior to amplicon sequencing, this study explored how the presence of DNA from dead microbial biomass carried over with feed sludge may mislead process-relevant biomarkers, and whether primer choice impacts such assessments. Four common primers were selected for amplicon preparation, also to determine if universal primers have sufficient taxonomic or functional coverage for monitoring ecological performance; or whether two domain-specific primers for Bacteria and Archaea are necessary.

Compared to other sarcomas, myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) is exceptionally sensitive to radiation therapy, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The objective was to assess the tissue-based changes in MLS during and after neoadjuvant radiotherapy in 26 patients of the DOREMY trial. Morphological assessment was performed on biopsies pre-treatment, after 8 fractions, 16 factions, and after surgical resection and included percentage of viable tumor cells, hyalinization, necrosis, and fatty maturation.
