Although electrostatic catalysis can enhance the kinetics and selectivity of reactions to produce greener synthetic processes, the highly directional nature of electrostatic interactions has limited widespread application. In this study, the influence of oriented electric fields (OEF) on radical addition and atom abstraction reactions are systematically explored with ion-trap mass spectrometry using structurally diverse distonic radical ions that maintain spatially separated charge and radical moieties. When installed on rigid molecular scaffolds, charged functional groups lock the magnitude and orientation of the internal electric field with respect to the radical site, creating an OEF which tunes the reactivity across the set of gas-phase carbon-centred radical reactions.

Article Synopsis
  • Aging leads to physiological changes and increased disease vulnerability, culminating in higher mortality rates as individuals get older.
  • Regular physical activity (PA) and exercise can counteract aging effects, improve health span, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
  • Personalized exercise plans, including various forms of training like aerobic and resistance exercises, are essential for maintaining health and functionality in older adults, particularly those with age-related issues.

Objectives: Findings regarding the effects of vitamin D supplementation on diabetes risk are inconclusive. Because inflammation and vitamin D levels are interconnected, we hypothesized that higher inflammation levels moderate the effects of vitamin D deficiency on diabetes risk.

Design, Setting, Participants, And Measurements: UK Biobank participants without pre-existing diabetes at baseline were included (N = 336,500).

Article Synopsis
  • Permanent pacemaker placement is necessary for newborns with congenital complete heart block (CCHB), but existing devices may not fit well, causing complications.
  • Medtronic has created a smaller Pediatric Implantable Pulse Generator (IPG) that uses a bipolar lead, making it more suitable for neonates.
  • This case report details a minimally invasive method for implanting the new Pediatric IPG in a 2.32 kg newborn soon after birth.

Background: Biomarkers for sarcopenia are lacking. We examined the diagnostic power of serum creatinine to cystatin C ratio for identifying low magnetic resonance imaging-muscle volume and low grip strength in a large observational study of UK Biobank older adults.

Methods: Serum creatinine and cystatin C were measured via immunoassays (Beckman Coulter AU5800 and Siemens Advia 1800, respectively) and grip strength by hydraulic hand dynamometer at baseline visit (2008-2010).
