Tendon injuries can be difficult to heal and have high rates of relapse due to stress concentrations caused by scar formation and the sutures used in surgical repair. Regeneration of the tendon/ligament-to-bone interface is critical to provide functional graft integration after injury. The objective of this study is to recreate the tendon-to-bone interface using a gradient scaffold which is fabricated by a one-station electrospinning process.

The synthesis of a series of di-, tri-, and tetraalkyl β-thiolactones and β-lactones is described as well as their thermal decomposition with extrusion of carbon oxysulfide and carbon dioxide in two solvents of opposite polarities. The β-thiolactones are considerably more thermally stable than the β-lactones and require higher temperatures for efficient decomposition in both solvents, whatever the degree of substitution. The results are interpreted in terms of a zwitterionic mechanism for fragmentation with a change in the rate-determining step between the two series.

A short synthesis of N-substituted 3,4-diarylpyrroles by condensation of a phenacyl halide with a primary amine and a phenylacetaldehyde is reported. The key step is an intramolecular cyclization of an in situ generated enamine onto a ketone. Using differently substituted aromatic reactants and N-(3-aminopropyl)azatricyclodecane as the amine component, the preparation of analogs of the cytotoxic marine alkaloid halitulin could be achieved.
