We experimentally and theoretically study phase coherence in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates of ^{87}Rb atoms on an atom chip. Using Ramsey interferometry we determine the temporal decay of coherence between the |F=1,m_{F}=-1⟩ and |F=2,m_{F}=+1⟩ hyperfine ground states. We observe that the coherence is limited by random collisional phase shifts due to the stochastic nature of atom loss.

In this work it is used to assess the spatial distribution of radiation induced defect in tungsten. In effect, its irradiation leads to the formation of nanometric dislocation loops that under certain conditions may form intriguing 3-D rafts.

Although nonclassical states of atomic ensembles were used to enhance measurement precision in quantum metrology, the notion of entanglement in these systems was debated because the correlations among the indistinguishable atoms were witnessed by collective measurements only. Here, we use high-resolution imaging to directly measure the spin correlations between spatially separated parts of a spin-squeezed Bose-Einstein condensate.

The trap allows us to capture a large number of atoms with modest electrical currents (40 A) and to generate large magnetic gradients (>300 G cm). Here we report a mixture containing 6 × 10 atoms for the two rubidium isotopes Rb and Rb.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA phase modulation puts the atom in a coherent superposition of quantum states with different kinetic energies. We have detected the interference of such modulated waves at the output of our atom interferometer, and we have observed beats at the difference of the modulation frequencies and its harmonics, in good agreement with theory. The phase modulations were produced by a Kerr phase modulator, i.
