We investigated the growth of straminipilous organisms on the skin, muscles and liver of herbivorous pirapitinga (Piaractus brachypomus) and carnivorous piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) in water of three different eutrophication levels. Sixteen straminipilous organism species were found growing on the investigated body parts of both species of fish used as baits. The higher number of species was found on the baits of carnivorous species (15) when compared with the ones from the herbivorous pirapitinga (10 species).

Column (CC), thin-layer (TLC), high-performance liquid (HPLC) and ion-exchange chromatography (IEC), were used to investigate corotenoid and carotenoprotein complexes in Asellus aquaticus specimens from the Narew river. The following carotenoids were found: alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, diadinoxanthin, mutatoxanthin, crustaxanthin, echinenone, hydroxyechinenone, phoenicoxanthin, canthaxanthin and astaxanthin. Astaxanthin (37.

The following species of predatory fungi, amoebicidal, rotifericidal and nematodicidal were found: Arthrobotrys oligospora Fresenius, Zoophagus insidians Somlnestorff, Somnuerstorffia spinosa Arnaudov, Dactylaria brochopaga Drechsler, Euryancale sacciospora Dreschler and Zoopage phanera Drechsler. Physico-chemical parameters of waters in basins and water-courses did not prove important effect on existence of fungi.

The carotenoprotein complexes of a freshwater fairy shrimp (Streptocephalus dichotomus) and a daphnid (Moina micrura) were characterised and compared. Based on thin layer chromatography and mass spectral analysis, a variety of cartenoprotein complexes such as astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, antheraxanthin, lutein, beta-cryptoxanthin and violaxanthin were found. Both crustaceans had astaxanthin and canthaxanthin as predominant prosthetic groups.
