Communities conquering COVID-19: Black and Latinx community perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 in regions of Michigan hardest hit by the pandemic.

Introduction: In Michigan, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted Black and Latinx communities. These communities experienced higher rates of exposure, hospitalizations, and deaths compared to Whites. We examine the impact of the pandemic and reasons for the higher burden on communities of color from the perspectives of Black and Latinx community members across four Michigan counties and discuss recommendations to better prepare for future public health emergencies.

Cancer Clinical Trial Participation: A Qualitative Study of Black/African American Communities' and Patient/Survivors' Recommendations.

Background: Black/African Americans experience a disproportionate cancer burden and mortality rates. Racial/ethnic variation in cancer burden reflects systemic and healthcare inequities, cancer risk factors, and heredity and genomic diversity. Multiple systemic, socio-cultural, economic, and individual factors also contribute to disproportionately low Black/African American participation in cancer clinical trials.

Evaluation of complications and biochemical recurrence rates after (super) extended lymph node dissection during radical prostatectomy.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of extended (e-PLND) and super-extended pelvic lymph node dissection (se-PLND) during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) by examining lymph node (LN) yield, complications, LN metastasis, and biochemical recurrence (BCR) incidence.

Methods: Between January 2016 and January 2020, 354 consecutive patients with > 5% risk of lymph node involvement (LNI), as predicted by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center nomogram, underwent RARP with (s)e-PLND at a high-volume center. The e-PLND involved removing fibrofatty lymphatic tissue around the obturator fossa, internal iliac region, and external iliac vessels.

Factors That Impact Effective Public Health Communication With Michigan's Latinx Population in the Context of COVID-19.

The far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Latinx communities is well-documented. This population has higher rates of COVID-19 infection and death compared with non-Latinx White Americans mainly due to long-standing problems related to Social Determinants of Health. Communication about issues such as health threats and safety measures are a vital part of public health, and need to be appropriate to the population of focus.
