What can multiple causes of death tell about cardiovascular mortality during COVID-19 pandemic in the United States?

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic may have caused an underestimation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, as COVID-19 was predominantly recorded as the underlying cause of death. This study investigates CVD-related excess mortality and recording of CVD on the death certificates during 2020-2021, considering underlying (underlying causes of death (UCD)), immediate and contributory causes.

Multiple-cause-of-death data have not yet been applied to the study of racial/ethnic differences in causal chains of events leading to death, nor they have been used to examine racial/ethnic disparities in cause-of-death certification. We use publicly available 2019 US death certificate data to reassemble chains of morbid events leading to death. From them, we construct and analyze directed multiple cause of death networks by race and sex of deaths aged 60+.

The influence of the increasing use of assisted reproduction technologies on the recent growth in fertility in Czechia.

This study aims to enhance the understanding of how the increasing use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has contributed to the increase in the total fertility rate (TFR) and to further delaying childbearing. Moreover, it addresses the gap in the methodology concerning the quantification of the effect of ART on fertility postponement. Czechia is one of few countries that are able to serve for the study of the demographic impacts of ART.

Selected aspects of mortality in Czechia and Slovakia in the pandemic year 2020.

Objective: The aim was to analyse the mortality trends in Czechia and Slovakia through detailed anonymized primary data on deaths in 2010-2020 and in particular to identify various aspects of the impact of the 2020 pandemic year in their context.

Methods: Using the DeRaS application, complete life tables by sex for 2010-2020 were constructed for Czechia and Slovakia, and changes in life expectancy at birth and at the exact age of 65 years were analysed. Using Pressat's univariate decomposition, the effect of different age groups on the change in life expectancy at birth for men and women between 2019 and 2020 was identified.
