Psychotropic Drug Use in Recreational Scuba Divers and its Effect on Severe Narcosis.

Recreational scuba diving is no longer reserved for young healthy individuals, and as a result, medical drug consumption is on the rise in the diving population. Due to the possible potentiation of nitrogen narcosis by psychotropic drugs, the latter are hence discouraged and are subject to contraindications for practice. However, there are no available experimental data to support this theoretical assumption.

Recreational scuba diving in patients with congenital heart disease: Time for new guidelines.

The number of recreational scuba divers is steadily increasing. In its latest recommendations, the French Federation of Undersea Studies and Sports listed congenital heart disease as a formal and final contraindication to scuba diving. On the other hand, with the progress made in their management, the prognosis and quality of life of patients with congenital heart diseases have improved considerably, enabling them to engage in physical and sports endeavours, which are known to confer general health and psychological benefits.

Effects of medical therapy on outcome assessment using exercise thallium-201 single photon emission computed tomography imaging: evidence of a protective effect of beta-blocking antianginal medications.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether antianginal medications modify the prognostic significance of exercise single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) ischemia.

Background: Antianginal medications (especially beta-adrenergic blocking agents) limit exercise SPECT ischemia, but it is not known whether such medications also modify the prognostic effect of exercise SPECT ischemia.

Methods: We included 352 patients with coronary heart disease, who had exercise Tl-201 SPECT and coronary angiography, and who were initially treated medically.

Incomplete bundle-branch block and ST-segment elevation: syndrome associated with sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia in patients with apparently normal heart.

This paper reports on three cases of patients with an apparently normal heart admitted for sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia. The only abnormal finding showed in the electrocardiogram (ECG) in sinus rhythm that exhibited an entity associated with incomplete right bundle-branch block and persistent ST-segment elevation. The ECG entity was variable and disappeared transiently.
