Multicore iron oxide mesocrystals stabilized by a poly(phenylenepyridyl) dendron and dendrimer: role of the dendron/dendrimer self-assembly.

We report the formation of multicore iron oxide mesocrystals using the thermal decomposition of iron acetyl acetonate in the presence of the multifunctional and rigid poly(phenylenepyridyl) dendron and dendrimer. We thoroughly analyze the influence of capping molecules of two different architectures and demonstrate for the first time that dendron/dendrimer self-assembly leads to multicore morphologies. Single-crystalline ordering in multicore NPs leads to cooperative magnetic behavior: mesocrystals exhibit ambient blocking temperatures, allowing subtle control over magnetic properties using a minor temperature change.

Nitric oxide mediates cardiovascular symptoms in alcohol withdrawal.

We studied whether nitric oxide is involved in cardiovascular symptoms in alcohol withdrawal. Cardiovascular effects of isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN; 20 mg sublingually), a nitric oxide donor were compared in 21 alcohol-dependent subjects during alcohol withdrawal (n=11) on days 1, 2, 3, and 10 to those during remission (n=10; duration=60.7+/-10.

Gastrin levels in patients with colorectal cancer.

Background/aims: In view of previous studies showing gastrin's trophic effects on tumor growth, the authors decided to investigate the relationship between fasting serum gastrin levels and the presence of colorectal carcinoma.

Methodology: Fifty-eight patients were studied: 19 controls who were blood bank donors, 19 patients with colorectal neoplasms, Dukes' Stage B or C, and 20 patients with advanced colorectal neoplasms (Dukes' Stage D). Pre-surgical and post-surgical serum gastrin levels were compared in patients with colorectal neoplasms (Dukes' Stage B or C).
