Deleterious effect of proton pump inhibitors on the disease course of cirrhosis.

Objectives: Proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) are widely prescribed to patients with liver cirrhosis. We hypothesized that long-standing PPI use is associated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP) and accelerated development of disease-specific complications and liver-related death.

Methods: A 5-year follow-up observational cohort study assessed the impact of long-standing PPI use on the clinical course of cirrhosis in a large referral patient cohort.

Real-time inverse kinematics for the upper limb: a model-based algorithm using segment orientations.

Background: Model based analysis of human upper limb movements has key importance in understanding the motor control processes of our nervous system. Various simulation software packages have been developed over the years to perform model based analysis. These packages provide computationally intensive-and therefore off-line-solutions to calculate the anatomical joint angles from motion captured raw measurement data (also referred as inverse kinematics).

Motor synergies during manual tracking differ between familiar and unfamiliar trajectories.

Synergistic control of the effector space allows high precision in task-relevant degrees of freedom, while noise is limited to task-irrelevant degrees of freedom. The present study investigates whether this typical structure of the variance-covariance matrix of the joint angles during manual tracking differs between familiar and unfamiliar trajectories. Subjects tracked a target moving in 2D on a graphics tablet with a hand-held pen, while their arm movements were not restricted.

Synergistic control of joint angle variability: influence of target shape.

Reaching movements are often used to study the effectiveness of motor control processes with respect to the final position of arm and hand. Empirical evidence shows that different targets can be grasped with similar final position accuracy. However, movements that achieve similar accuracy at their final position may nevertheless be controlled differently.

Chronic effects of inhaled albuterol on beta-adrenoceptor system function in human respiratory cells.

The in vivo effects of beta-adrenergic receptor (betaAR) agonists given chronically by metered-dose inhaler (MDI) on the molecular components of the beta-adrenoceptor system expressed by human respiratory cells are poorly understood. This study examined the effects of inhaled albuterol (180 microg four times daily for 7 days) on betaAR function of airway epithelial cells (AECs) and alveolar macrophages (AMs) freshly isolated from 10 normal subjects. Responses were related to beta2AR genotype in codons 16 and 27, regions which affect chronic responses to beta2-agonists.
