Aging is a major risk factor for poor outcomes following respiratory infections. In animal models, the most severe outcomes of respiratory infections in older hosts have been associated with an increased burden of senescent cells that accumulate over time with age and create a hyperinflammatory response. Although studies using coronavirus animal models have demonstrated that removal of senescent cells with senolytics, a class of drugs that selectively kills senescent cells, resulted in reduced lung damage and increased survival, little is known about the role that senescent cells play in the outcome of influenza A viral (IAV) infections in aged mice.

Background: Brady- and tachyarrhythmias commonly complicate adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Permanent pacemakers (PPMs) or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are often utilised to prevent morbidity or mortality related to arrhythmia, but can also be associated with significant morbidity themselves.

Methods: We analysed outcomes from patients in our comprehensive ACHD database who were seen at least twice since 2000 and once since 2018.

Blindness or deafness can significantly influence sensory abilities in intact modalities, affecting communication, orientation and navigation. Explanations for why certain abilities are enhanced and others degraded include: crossmodal cortical reorganization enhances abilities by providing additional neural processing resources; and sensory processing is impaired for tasks where calibration from the normally intact sense is required for good performance. However, these explanations are often specific to tasks or modalities, not accounting for why task-dependent enhancement or degradation are observed.

Background: Prenatal exposure to cannabis (or more specifically, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol [Δ9-THC]) has been consistently linked to low birthweight. Animal models further show that Δ9-THC is associated with rapid postnatal growth. Whether this association is modified by breastfeeding is unknown.
