Episodic consumption of high doses of alcohol in a short period (binge drinking - BD) among adolescents is known to be harmful to their brain development. Chronic use of taurine increases voluntary alcohol consumption and shows an anxiolytic-like effect in rats. In this study, we evaluated the differential effects of chronic and intermittent taurine administration on alcohol consumption and behavioral changes in adolescent and young adult rats subjected to the BD model.

This work investigated the peptide profile of skin secretion from Lithobates palmipes collected from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The secretion was submitted to reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and the fractions were screened for antibacterial activity. RP-HPLC resulted in the separation of several peaks, among which 10 showed antibacterial activity and contained peptides of the ranatuerin, brevinin and temporin families.

Background/aim: To investigate the factors related to non-reversal of ostomy after cytoreductive surgery in ovarian cancer. In many women with ovarian cancer, transitory ostomies are performed to limit the consequences of anastomotic leak. Although intended to be temporary, a proportion of these ostomies might never be reversed.

Telomere biology disorders (TBDs), caused by pathogenic germ line variants in telomere-related genes, present with multiorgan disease and a predisposition to cancer. Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) as a marker of cancer development and survival in TBDs is poorly understood. Here, we characterized the clonal landscape of a large cohort of 207 patients with TBD with a broad range of age and phenotype.

Article Synopsis
  • The article discusses the development of three new nickel(II) complexes with dithiocarbazate ligands, noted for their distinct square planar geometry and coordination with either pyridine or triphenylphosphine.
  • Single-crystal X-ray analyses and Hirshfeld surface studies revealed critical non-covalent interactions, primarily π⋅⋅⋅π stacking and specific hydrogen bonding patterns, confirming their solid state and solution structures through various physicochemical methods.
  • Toxicity tests on human breast cancer cell lines showed that the complexes effectively inhibited cell growth, particularly in malignant cells, indicating their potential for further therapeutic investigation.
