Left anterior mini-thoracotomy: an alternative approach for pulmonary valve replacement after surgically corrected tetralogy of fallot.

Introduction: Pulmonary regurgitation (PR) remains a common sequela in patients following surgically corrected TOF, and may lead to progressive right ventricle dilatation and dysfunction. The conventional approach of redo-sternotomy for pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) is associated with increased operative time as well as risks of bleeding and injury to the heart and great vessels. Thus, left anterior mini-thoracotomy has become an alternative approach in eliminating the risks of redo-sternotomy in these patients.

Environmental and genetic regulation of Streptococcus pneumoniae galactose catabolic pathways.

Efficient utilization of nutrients is crucial for microbial survival and virulence. The same nutrient may be utilized by multiple catabolic pathways, indicating that the physical and chemical environments for induction as well as their functional roles may differ. Here, we study the tagatose and Leloir pathways for galactose catabolism of the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Influence of traditional processing and genotypes on the antioxidant and antihyperglycaemic activities of yellow-fleshed cassava.

Yellow-fleshed cassava root (YFCR) is processed into traditional products that may influence its bioactivities. In this study, the antioxidant and anti-hyperglycaemic activities of three traditional products ( and ) from five genotypes (IITA-TMS-IBA070337, 182961, 182962, 182986, 183044) of YFCR were evaluated. The YFCR genotypes were grown at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) research field, Ibadan.

Host Stress Signals Stimulate Pneumococcal Transition from Colonization to Dissemination into the Lungs.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an asymptomatic colonizer of the nasopharynx, but it is also one of the most important bacterial pathogens of humans, causing a wide range of mild to life-threatening diseases. The basis of the pneumococcal transition from a commensal to a parasitic lifestyle is not fully understood. We hypothesize that exposure to host catecholamine stress hormones is important for this transition.
