The role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in the COVID-19 response across the Global South: A multinational, qualitative study.

Despite receiving less attention than high-income countries, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) experienced more than 85% of global excess deaths during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the unprecedented speed and scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, which placed large demands on government capacity, many LMICs relied on civil society organizations (CSOs) to assist in implementing COVID-19 response programs. Yet few studies have examined the critical role CSOs played in mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in low resource settings.

Progressive transformation of germinal centers. Report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Progressive transformation of germinal centers (PTGC) is a disease of mostly young adults that presents as unexplained, asymptomatic, localized or generalized lymphadenopathy which is usually persistent or recurrent over periods of many years. Histologically, the germinal centers contain a variable proportion of small mantle zone lymphocytes and thus become progressively transformed and may result in the loss of clear demarcation between them and the mantle zone. Here, we describe two cases of this disease and review the literature on the association of PTGC with lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's disease.

Allogeneic blood cell transplantation following reduced-intensity conditioning is effective therapy for older patients with myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia.

Standard myeloablative conditioning prior to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation has been associated with significant toxicity in patients older than 45 years of age with myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia (MMM). We sought to evaluate the efficacy of a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen for allogeneic HSC transplantation in this setting. A regimen consisting of fludarabine (30 mg/m(2) intravenously daily for 5 days) and melphalan (70 mg/m(2) intravenously daily for 2 days) followed by transplantation of filgrastim-mobilized peripheral blood cells from HLA-identical siblings was administered to 4 older patients (median age, 56 years; range, 48-58 years) with advanced MMM.

Interleukin 10-induced thrombocytopenia in normal healthy adult volunteers: evidence for decreased platelet production.

Recombinant human interleukin 10 (rhuIL-10) inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines and has shown promise in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Clinical trials have been accompanied by a reversible decline in platelet counts. We conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial in 12 healthy volunteers to investigate the aetiology of rhuIL-10-induced thrombocytopenia.

CD5+ immunophenotype in the bone marrow but not in the peripheral blood in a patient with hairy cell leukemia.

We report the case of a patient with rare CD5+ hairy cell leukemia, which was unusual, as there was also a discrepancy between the bone marrow and peripheral blood immunophenotypes. We propose that some degree of maturation within the malignant clone and the predominance of more mature CD5- hairy cells in the peripheral blood can explain this observation. The patient was treated with a conventional course of cladribine (2'-chlorodeoxyadenosine) and achieved complete remission.
