Knowledge and attitude among Egyptian medical students regarding the role of human papillomavirus vaccine in prevention of oropharyngeal cancer: a questionnaire-based observational study.

Squamous cell carcinomas in several anatomical sites are caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV), and oncogenic double-stranded DNA viruses. There are about 200 genotypes; HPV16 is the most often occurring variant. Potential ways of infection are skin warts, sexual activity, exposure, immunization, or oral sex.

Anesthesia for an infant with congenital mediastinal mass: a case report.

Background: Giant anterior mediastinal masses in infants are one of the most challenging cases faced in pediatric anesthesia practice. They can pose unique challenges for resection such as cardiovascular collapse on induction of anesthesia and injury to surrounding structures that maybe compressed or displaced. Principles that must be followed and kept in mind during removal of giant mediastinal mass include appropriate diagnostic imaging to define mass extent, airway control during induction, a multidisciplinary team approach including cardiothoracic for sternotomy, cannulation to institute cardiopulmonary bypass, otolaryngology for rigid bronchoscopy, preservation of neurovascular structure, and complete resection whenever possible.

Assessing the risk of venous thromboembolism in patients with haematological cancers using three prediction models.

Purpose: Assessment of individual VTE risk in cancer patients prior to chemotherapy is critical for determining necessity of interventions. Risk assessment models (RAM) are available but have not been validated for haematological malignancy. We aimed to assess the validity of the Vienna Cancer and Thrombosis Study (V-CATS) score in prediction of VTE in a variety of haematological malignancies.

The role of mitochondrial/metabolic axis in development of tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer.

Only a few investigations, to our knowledge, have examined the bioenergetics of Tamoxifen (TMX) resistant individuals and reported altered mitochondrial activity and metabolic profile. The primary cause of TMX resistance is firmly suggested to be metabolic changes. Metabolic variations and hypoxia have also been linked in a bidirectional manner.

We sought in our cross-sectional study to investigate the role of metabolic/hypoxial axis in the development of tamoxifen (TMX) resistance in BC patients. Quantification of plasma LncRNA Taurine upregulated-1 (TUG-1), miRNA 186-5p (miR-186), serum Sirtuin-3 (SIRT3), Peroxisome Proliferator Activator Receptor alpha (PPAR-1 α) and Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 (HIF-1α) was done in a cohort of patients divided into TMX-sensitive and TMX-resistant candidates. Multiple logistic regression and Receiver Operating Characteristic curve were developed for significant predictors.

Does Serum Osteocalcin Level Affect Carotid Atherosclerosis in Post-Menopausal Diabetic Females? A Case-Control Study.

Purpose: To determine the association between serum osteocalcin and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in a group of post-menopausal females with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Patients And Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 75 postmenopausal women with T2DM and 40 age matched postmenopausal healthy females. Age, body mass index, blood pressure were recorded for all subjects.

Aptamer-functionalized pH-sensitive liposomes for a selective delivery of echinomycin into cancer cells.

Echinomycin (quinomycin A) is a peptide antibiotic from the quinoxaline family, which has a DNA bifunctional intercalating activity and an inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF1α). Echinomycin was discovered in 1957 as a potent antitumor agent; however, it was not successful in clinical use due to its low water solubility and short half-life. To revitalize this potent drug, it is important to increase its aqueous solubility and bioavailability.

Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy: Initial Experience Evaluating Patients Satisfaction and Oncological Safety in a Tertiary Care Centre in Jordan.

Introduction Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM), a procedure involving careful dissection of the breast tissue whilst keeping the nipple-areola complex (NAC) intact, is now increasingly practiced amongst surgeons in the treatment of certain situations of breast cancer. Given the importance of breasts to the female body image, this type of conservative breast surgery takes into account patient satisfaction and overall cosmesis, whilst ensuring appropriate oncological safety. Methods and results Four nipple-sparing mastectomy procedures were performed in our tertiary care centre, Princess Basma Teaching Hospital, in Jordan between June and September 2019.

Preparation, Characterization, and Anticancer Effects of Capsaicin-Loaded Nanoliposomes.

Background: Medicinal plants have proven their value as a source of molecules with therapeutic potential, and recent studies have shown that capsaicin has profound anticancer effects in several types of human cancers. However, its clinical use is handicapped due to its poor pharmacokinetics. This study aims to enhance capsaicin's pharmacokinetic properties by loading the molecule into nanoliposomes model and testing its anticancer activity.

Evaluation of the synergistic antimicrobial effect of folk medicinal plants with clindamycin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Antibiotic resistance has become a major worldwide priority, and identifying natural antimicrobial compounds may help overcome this problem. In this study, ethanolic extracts of 12 plants commonly used in traditional medicine were tested against two strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 33591 and ATCC 43300) in terms of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Furthermore, the effect of combining plant extracts with clindamycin antibiotic was also investigated using the checkerboard method.

Genetic testing of children to predict their future risk of illness is controversial. When parents make the decision to test their children, they deprive them of their autonomy. Furthermore, while genetic testing to predict the onset of treatable illnesses is welcomed, healthcare providers argue that it is of no benefit for untreatable disorders, such as certain types of cancer.

Pharmacogenetic Warfarin Dosing Algorithms: Validity in Egyptian Patients.

Background/aims: Data from previous reports, addressing the significance of genotype-guided dosing of warfarin in Egyptian patients, are infrequent and controversial. This study is aimed at demonstrating the validity of genetic dosing algorithms in Egyptian patients on warfarin therapy.

Methods: A total of 100 Egyptian patients on a stable maintenance daily dose of warfarin were enrolled.

Background: The distance from the dura to spinal cord is not uniform at different vertebral levels. The dura to spinal cord distance may be a critical factor in avoiding the potential for neurological injury caused by needle trauma after a dural puncture. Typically, the greater the dura to spinal cord distance, the larger the potential safety margin.

Protein C global is a global dotting assay that evaluates abnormalities in the protein C anticoagulant pathway. A few studies have examined this assay in relation to assisted reproductive technology (ART), but its role in infertile women with in vitro fertilization (IVF) failure remains unclear. In this study, we assessed protein C in infertile women with a history of IVF failure who were undergoing ART.
