Background: Several clinical practice guidelines strongly support the use of ultrasound guidance (USG) for internal jugular vein catheterization. The level of evidence concerning the use of USG for subclavian vein (SCV) cannulation remains low.

Aim: To compare the effectiveness and safety of USG and anatomical landmarks approaches for cannulation of SCV.

Negative-pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE) is a rare respiratory complication due to acute upper airway obstruction occurring shortly after extubation. Article Synopsis
  • - This study compared the effectiveness and safety of two methods for catheterizing the internal jugular vein: out-of-plane internal jugular vein (OOP-IJV) and in-plane supraclavicular subclavian vein (IP-SSCV) in adult ICU patients.
  • - Results showed that the IP-SSCV method had a significantly higher first attempt success rate (83.2%) compared to OOP-IJV (63.2%), along with fewer puncture attempts and less guidewire advancement difficulties.
  • - The study concluded that the IP-SSCV approach is a better alternative to the OOP-IJV method for central venous catheterization in critically ill adults due to its effectiveness and safety.
