Recent studies have revealed that aberrant glycosylation causes various human diseases. Here we report that mice lacking beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT)-I, which transfers galactose to the terminal N-acetylglucosamine of N- and O-linked glycans in a beta-1,4 linkage, spontaneously developed human immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN)-like glomerular lesions with IgA deposition and expanded mesangial matrix.

We have investigated the possible influence of HSA-FeP on the complement system and platelet activation in vitro. Case Report: An 81-year-old man with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (Clinical Stage IIIA) received a plateletpheresis unit containing at least 4 x 10(11) platelets because of thrombocytopenia and a bleeding tendency.
A 52-year-old male was admitted to our hospital complaining of orthostatic vertigo, fatigue and weight loss, who underwent right total nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma(RCC) with curative operation 13 years ago (in 1992). Endoscopic examination revealed a submucosal tumor with erosion in the duodenum. The diagnosis made from the biopsy specimens was metastatic RCC in the duodenum.

The cryogenic fluid transfer technique will prove useful for flexible and low-cost space activities by prolonging the life cycle of satellites, orbital transfer vehicles, and orbital telescopes that employ cryogenic fluids, such as reactants, coolants, and propellants. Although NASA has conducted extensive research on this technique to date, a complicated mechanism is required to control the pressure in the receiver tank and avoid a large liquid loss by vaporization. Thus, the present experiments were designed to investigate the relaxation mechanism of linalyl acetate as the major ingredient of lavender essential oil in rabbit carotid artery specimens. A 44-year-old woman who had SLE with secondary APS had been treated with corticosteroid therapy, however, her inflammatory marker had never been within a normal range in her clinical course, and finally acute myocardial infarction was developed. Intra-vascular ultrasound also revealed diffuse coronary atherosclerosis progression for her age, which might result from SLE and APS, including vascular inflammation.

Methods: The impact of p38 mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) on CAN was investigated by administering FR167653 (32 mg/kg/day), a specific inhibitor of p38 MAPK, for 4 weeks in addition to conventional cyclosporine therapy (1.5 mg/kg/day for 5 days) in an established experimental rat transplantation model.
Although it has been well documented that vitamin D receptor (VDR) activation influences the expression of various genes involved in calcium homeostasis and cell differentiation, the physiological role of VDR action in hemostasis remains unclear. We studied thrombogenicity in normocalcemic VDR knock-out (KO) mice on a high calcium diet in comparison with that in wild-type mice and that in hypocalcemic VDRKO mice fed a regular diet. Platelet aggregation was significantly enhanced in normocalcemic VDRKO mice.

The present study focused on the impact of sine and pulse waveforms on anterograde memory and nonmemory cognitive functions.
Methods: We assigned 18 patients with unipolar major depression or bipolar I or II disorder, most recent episode depressed, to receive sine wave or pulse wave ECT and assessed their cognitive function before and after ECT, using a neuropsychologic test battery that measured anterograde memory, attention, and executive functions.

Arginase activity in the myometrium was significantly decreased during the 7th-21st day of gestation, with the lowest value on the 14th day. However, the enzyme activity became significantly higher at term gestation (22nd day) than that in the non-pregnant myometrium.
