Article Synopsis
  • - Autoantibody tests like RF and ANA are frequently used for screening rheumatic diseases but often result in unnecessary referrals, anxiety, and costs due to their low predictive value in general practice.
  • - A study analyzed 638 patient referrals to rheumatologists and found that many patients underwent inappropriate autoantibody tests, including 20% who had ANA testing without a clinical reason.
  • - The findings highlight a need for more selective testing practices, as over 50% of the tests ordered were unnecessary, suggesting significant potential for cost reduction and improved patient care.

Background: The safety and efficacy of venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment in patients with acute leukemia (AL) are not well understood and the optimal treatment strategy is unclear.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature aiming to identify observational studies and randomized trials describing treatment of VTE in the setting of AL including, acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Due to the heterogeneity of findings, no meta-analysis was attempted.

The purpose of this study was to describe perioperative mortality rates after mitral valve operations in a contemporary cohort.
