Safety and efficacy of a dexamethasone anterior segment drug delivery system in patients after phacoemulsification.

Purpose: To compare the safety and efficacy of the Surodex dexamethasone anterior segment drug delivery system (Oculex Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) and dexamethasone 0.1% eyedrops (Maxidex) in patients with inflammation after cataract surgery.

Unidentified foreign objects in the wound after clear corneal tunnel phacoemulsification.

We describe the presence of unidentified foreign objects, including small freckles and fibrillary material, in the corneal stroma seen on slitlamp biomicroscopy in 2 patients who had uneventful clear corneal tunnel phacoemulsification. Clinically, these foreign objects did not appear to affect the final visual outcome. Further study is required to explain their source, role in the wound healing, and toxicity and the behavior of metallic particles in the magnetic field in relation to magnetic resonance imaging.

Inadvertent ocular perforation and intravitreal injection of an anesthetic agent during retrobulbar injection.

We report the clinical management of a patient who sustained scleral perforation and intraocular injection of local anesthetic agent during retrobulbar block. We discuss the management options for this rare complication of local anesthesia in cataract surgery.

Sensitivity and specificity of frequency-doubling technology, tendency-oriented perimetry, and Humphrey Swedish interactive threshold algorithm-fast perimetry in a glaucoma practice.

Purpose: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the screening mode of the Humphrey-Welch Allyn frequency-doubling technology (FDT), Octopus tendency-oriented perimetry (TOP), and the Humphrey Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm (SITA)-fast (HSF) in patients with glaucoma.

Design: A comparative consecutive case series.

Methods: This was a prospective study which took place in the glaucoma unit of an academic department of ophthalmology.
