Background: To describe utilization and outcomes of submandibular gland flap (SGF) reconstruction after transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC).

Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective case series of patients who underwent TORS for OPSCC followed by SGF reconstruction with harvest via transcervical approach from 1/1/2016 to 4/1/2023.

Results: In total, 14 patients underwent SGF reconstruction after TORS for OPSCC.

A patient with chronic submandibular sialolithiasis underwent conservative treatment with appropriate imaging and multiple biopsies that continually revealed chronic inflammation. Due to continued symptoms, the patient underwent eventual excision and finaly pathology revealed salivary mucinous adenocarcinoma, which is a rare and poorly understood salivary malignancy. Persistent diagnostic workup and a high suspicion for salivary gland lesions is important for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-mediated squamous cell carcinomas of the oropharynx are common, however only rare cases of HPV-mediated oropharyngeal adenocarcinoma have been reported to date. In this report, we describe a 50 year old nonsmoking male who originally presented with an enlarging neck mass. Fine needle aspiration cytology confirmed an HPV-mediated adenocarcinoma.

Our purpose was to assess the potential utility of narrowband imaging (NBI) as a tool in diagnosing and treating unknown primary oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in patients prior to diagnostic resection with transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Objectives/hypothesis: For locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treated by surgery and adjuvant therapy, consensus has yet to be reached on whether the optimal time to initiate surveillance positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan is before or after adjuvant therapy. In this study, we characterize the utility of PET/CT scans obtained 3 months after adjuvant therapy.

Objective: To determine the association of alcohol abstinence with postoperative outcome in alcohol misusers undergoing major surgical procedures of the head and neck.

Design, Setting, And Participants: As a case-control study, from July 2013 to August 2015, outcomes were collected in patients at an academic tertiary referral center requiring free flap reconstruction who had undergone an abstinence contract (n = 15) and compared with those who were abusers of alcohol prior to the inception of the protocol (n = 30).

Objective: Although the majority of human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas have a favorable prognosis, we search for markers of poor prognosis by carefully examining a subset of highly aggressive cases.

Study Design: Seven patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer who presented with non-pulmonary distant metastasis or developed distant metastasis posttreatment were identified. Eight control cases were chosen which responded well to treatment.
