Background: Isotretinoin is widely used for moderate to severe acne vulgaris. Despite its broad application, isotretinoin carries a risk of permanent scarring and keloid formation following various skin procedures. As a result, a delay of at least 6-12 months after completing or discontinuing isotretinoin treatment is commonly recommended before undergoing skin procedures.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares cryotherapy and electrosurgery methods for removing bothersome skin conditions like sebaceous hyperplasia and cherry angioma.
  • Conducted as an assessor-blind trial with 32 lesions in each treatment group, it assessed patient and physician satisfaction over several follow-up visits.
  • Results indicated that while electrosurgery showed higher satisfaction for most conditions, cryotherapy was more effective for treating seborrheic keratosis; some side effects like hypopigmentation were observed in both methods.

Aims And Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine the efficacy and safety of various regenerative medicine treatments, such as cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), plasma-poor platelet (PPP), plasma-rich fibrin (PRF), mesenchymal stem cells, stromal vascular fraction (SVF), exosomes, adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC), and stem cell-conditioned media (SC-CM), for treating vitiligo.

Method: We conducted a thorough search of major databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and selected 48 articles based on specific criteria. We used EndNote X8 and Google Sheets to review and extract data from the articles.

Background: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are rare, severe, and potentially life-threatening skin and mucous membrane disorders. They are characterized by widespread skin and mucosal detachment and necrosis, and are classified based on the percentage of total body surface area (TBSA) affected. Given the severe and often life-threatening nature of these conditions, the identification and implementation of effective treatments is crucial.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonmelanoma skin cancer, particularly basal cell carcinoma (BCC), is the most common type of skin malignancy worldwide, highlighting the need for effective early detection strategies.
  • This study analyzed clinical and pathological records of 229 BCC patients, revealing a high diagnostic accuracy, with 80.3% of cases confirmed as BCC upon pathological review and a significant number (42%) lacking prior clinical diagnoses.
  • The findings stress the importance of better training for healthcare providers in recognizing BCC symptoms and suggest increased collaboration with dermatologists to enhance diagnostic skills and patient outcomes.

Background: Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that negatively affects patients' quality of life. Increasing antibiotic resistance is making acne less responsive to treatment. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits by fighting pathogens and maintaining intestinal homeostasis and skin microbiome balance.

Background: The treatment of vitiligo is a persistent challenge in dermatology. New treatments are being offered and studied in this field for those resistant to or intolerant of classical therapies.

Aims: In this systematic review, we study the use of prostaglandin analogues (PGAs) and phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDEIs) in the treatment of vitiligo, as they are known for their pigmentation inducing effects through activating melanocytes.

Background: The challenging management of melasma highlights the inadequacies of conventional therapies and their high risk of recurrence. Integrating microneedling for device-assisted drug delivery with tranexamic acid (TA), recognized for its melanin synthesis inhibition, presents a novel approach that warrants further investigation to fully assess its potential in enhancing melasma treatment efficacy.

Methods: Fifty moderate to severe melasma patients participated in this randomized outcome-assessor-blinded controlled trial.

  • Morbihan's disease is a rare condition that leads to chronic swelling of the face, with unclear causes related to blood vessel and lymphatic system issues.
  • Traditional treatments are usually not effective, and there’s no widely accepted successful therapy for the condition.
  • A case study of a 17-year-old male showed improvement using a new combination treatment of cromolyn sodium nasal spray and oral montelukast, which had not been previously reported for this syndrome.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of stromal vascular fraction (SVF), platelet rich plasma (PRP), and 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in reducing nanofat treated dark circles and wrinkles under the eyes.

Method: This study was a single-blinded randomized clinical trial conducted on patients with suborbital darkening under the eyes that randomly divided into control and case groups. In the control group, 15 patients were treated with one session of nanofat injection only, and five patients of each intervention groups received one session of nanofat+SVF injection, nanofat+PRP injection, and nanofat injection+Nd:YAG laser, respectively.

  • Phototherapy, particularly UVB treatment, is effective for various skin diseases, including psoriasis, but can lead to vesiculobullous lesions that may indicate Bullous Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (BSLE).
  • BSLE is a rare form of lupus that presents as blisters and can be diagnosed through specific immunofluorescence findings.
  • The study discusses a case of a 70-year-old man with vesicular lesions after UVB therapy, confirming BSLE and noting improvement with dapsone treatment, emphasizing the need to consider BSLE in similar cases.

  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a challenging inflammatory skin condition with limited treatment options, and traditional TNF-α inhibitors often show insufficient efficacy.
  • Recent studies have explored the effectiveness of newer anti-TNF drugs, certolizumab pegol (CPZ) and golimumab, suggesting they might be beneficial for patients refractory to existing treatments.
  • A review of multiple studies indicates that both CPZ and golimumab demonstrated safety and efficacy in managing moderate-to-severe HS, particularly in individuals who did not respond to other therapies like adalimumab.

Introduction: Severe acne breakouts often lead to atrophic acne scars, which affect millions of people worldwide and can significantly affect a person's self-confidence and self-image. Given the difficulty in treating atrophic acne scars, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of topical phenytoin in the treatment of atrophic acne scars.

Method: This split face clinical trial on 25 patients between the ages of 18 and 40 involved the application of microneedling on one side of the face, with three sessions taking place over the course of a month.

Introduction: Due to the increasing prevalence of immune-mediated diseases such as psoriasis, lichen planus, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, dermatologists have turned to new biologic drugs known as DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) in recent years.

Areas Covered: In this study, we evaluate the immune-mediated dermatological side effects of DMARDS by reviewing and analyzing previous peer-reviewed research on the effects of TNF-α inhibitors in the treatment of skin diseases, as well as adverse effects of these drugs and some of the main causes of these effects.

Expert Opinion: DMARDs are very effective in improving control of the above diseases.

Introduction: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is one of the most common causes of scarring hair loss caused by immune-mediated inflammation resulting in atrophy and scaling. The key to preventing this irreversible hair loss is diagnosing and starting treatment at the earliest possible stage. As there is no definite cure for LPP, the therapy could be challenging.
