The relationship between thymic epithelial tumour and demyelinating disease (DD) is unknown and surgical resection has not been optimized. A 39-year-old woman was administrated methylprednisolone for newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis. A thymic tumour was found in the antero-superior mediastinum via computed tomography of the chest.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a naturally occurring compound found in ambient air which can induce cancer and sick-building syndrome. It plays an important role in the formation of OH radicals, which are connected to the formation of various airborne chemicals. Herein, we present a simple modeling for the simulation of diurnal variations in the HCHO concentration of ambient air.

Inhalation therapy using small-interfering RNA (siRNA) is a potentially effective therapeutic strategy for lung cancer because of its high gene-silencing effects and sequence specificity. Previous studies reported that intratracheal administration of siRNA using pressurized metered dose inhalers or nebulizers could suppress tumor growth in murine lung metastatic models. Although dry powder inhalers are promising devices due to their low cost, good portability, and preservability, the anti-tumor effects of siRNA dry powder have not been elucidated.

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is one of the most abundant molecules on earth and plays a pivotal role in the marine sulfur cycle. DMSP is believed to be synthesized from methionine by a four-step reaction pathway in marine algae. The genes responsible for biosynthesis of DMSP remain unidentified.

Recently, we found that resident myogenic stem satellite cells upregulate a multi-functional secreted protein, semaphorin 3A (Sema3A), exclusively at the early-differentiation phase in response to muscle injury; however, its physiological significance is still unknown. Here we show that Sema3A impacts slow-twitch fiber generation through a signaling pathway, cell-membrane receptor (neuropilin2-plexinA3) → myogenin-myocyte enhancer factor 2D → slow myosin heavy chain. This novel axis was found by small interfering RNA-transfection experiments in myoblast cultures, which also revealed an additional element that Sema3A-neuropilin1/plexinA1, A2 may enhance slow-fiber formation by activating signals that inhibit fast-myosin expression.

The present study was undertaken to examine whether potential levels of innate immune factors (lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP), lactoferrin (LF) and lactoperoxidase (LPO)) in colostrum are associated with subsequent milk somatic cell count (SCC) in dairy cows. Quarter milk samples were collected daily for 1 week postpartum to measure LAP and LF concentrations and LPO activity. SCC in milk was determined weekly for 2 months postpartum and its correlations to concentrations of LAP and LF and LPO activity were examined.

We designed a novel DNA probe and novel PCR primer sets for detecting the genes coding for Staphylococcus hyicus (S. hyicus) exfoliative toxin (ET). In dot blot hybridization, the novel DNA probe hybridized with chromosomal DNA of ExhA-, ExhB-, ExhC-, ExhD-, and SHETA-producing strains.

We report a 66-year-old man with hepatic encephalopathy due to a non-cirrhotic porto-systemic shunt during the course of treatment for epilepsy with sodium valproate. The patient developed symptomatic epilepsy after an operation for intracranial arterio-venous malformation at the age of 41, and had been treated with sodium valproate and phenytoin since. At the age of 66, he developed convulsions that were thought to be symptomatic epilepsy with hyperammonemia.
