Influence of context on quality improvement priorities: a qualitative study of three facility types in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Background: Quality improvement (QI) collaboratives are increasingly popular. However, there is a need for an in-depth understanding of the influence of context on its implementation. We explored the influence of context on the change concepts considered by public primary (primary health centres), public secondary (public hospitals) and private (private facilities) collaboratives established to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Concurrent femoral neck fractures following pelvic irradiation: a case report.

Introduction: Fracture of the neck of the femur is common in older people. It often occurs in a single hip, with osteoporosis being the most common cause. Sometimes this fracture may also occur following pelvic irradiation, though this is not common.

Chronic osteomyelitis in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Aim: To review cases of chronic osteomyelitis managed at a private health institution (Ela Memorial Medical Centre, Ilorin, Nigeria) between March 1995 and February 2005. PATIENTS AND METHODS; Case notes and X-rays of the patients who presented at EMMC with chronic osteomyelitis were reviewed retrospectively. Age, sex, sites of bone involvement and outcome of treatment were recorded.

Malignant skin tumor in Blacks: experience in a teaching hospital.

Background: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is said to be the most common human skin malignancy. Its common presentation is in a Caucasian male older than 60 years, and patients could present with multiple co-existing tumors.

Methods: We retrospectively review 146 patients treated for skin tumors in our tertiary hospital from January 1979 to December 2002.

Clinico-pathological patterns of squamous cell carcinoma in Nigeria.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer and frequently arises in the sun-exposed skin of middle-aged and elderly individuals. We retrospectively reviewed 443 patients managed for SCC (cutaneous and non-cutaneous) in our hospital from January 1979 to December 2002. The age distribution showed peak incidence between fourth and sixth decades of life.

Tuberculosis of the spine in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Background: Data on tuberculosis (TB) of the spine from Nigeria is scanty despite the endemicity of the disease.

Objective: To highlight hospital data on spinal tuberculosis.

Design: A ten-year retrospective study of records on spinal TB from the medical records, orthopaedic and medical wards was done.
