Article Synopsis
  • - This review targets researchers looking into air pollution control, specifically on recent advancements in removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using plasma-catalysis technology, which enhances degradation and minimizes by-products.
  • - Two configurations for plasma-catalysis are highlighted: "post plasma catalysis configuration" (PPC), where the catalyst is downstream from the plasma, and "in plasma catalysis configuration" (IPC), where the catalyst is in direct contact with the plasma discharge.
  • - The review also explores the synergy between plasma and catalysis, discussing how each affects the other, which could lead to improved air purification systems for industrial and indoor settings.

This study investigates the pilot-scale combination of nonthermal plasma and photocatalysis for removing Toluene and dimethyl sulfur (DMDS), examining the influence of plasma energy and initial pollutant concentration on the performance and by-product formation in both pure compounds and mixtures. The results indicate a consistent 15% synergy effect, improving Toluene conversion rates compared to single systems. Ozone reduction and enhanced CO selectivity were observed when combining plasma and photocatalysis.

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) using a TiO catalyst is an effective technique to remove gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, a lab-scale continuous reactor is used to investigate the photocatalytic performance toward ethylbenzene (EB) vapor removal over TiO nanoparticles immobilized on glass fiber tissue. The role of the reactive species in the removal of EB and the degradation pathway were studied.

In many nations, particularly those experiencing water scarcity, novel approaches are being applied to clean wastewater. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is the most widely used of these approaches because it entails the decomposition of organic molecules into water and carbon dioxide, which is a more ecologically benign process. In our study, we studied the photocatalytic degradation process on the effluent flumequine.

Nowadays, in parallel to the appearance of the COVID-19 virus, the risk of viruses in water increases leading to the necessity of developing novel disinfection methods. This review focuses on the route of virus contamination in water and introduces non-thermal plasma technology as a promising method for the inactivation of viruses. Effects of essential parameters affecting the non-thermal discharge for viral inactivation have been exposed.

In this work, we present the influence of the decoration of TiO nanotubes (TiO-NTs) with Ag silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) on the photocatalysis of emerging pollutants such as the antibiotic diclofenac sodium. The Ag-NPs were loaded onto the TiO-NTs by the anodization of metallic titanium foils. Diclofenac sodium is an emerging pollutant target of the pharmaceutical industry because of its negative environmental impact (high toxicity and confirmed carcinogenicity).

In this work, a solution for the treatment of toxic gases based on a photocatalytic process using TiO coated on a cellulosic support, has been investigated. Here, cyclohexane was chosen as the reference for testing its removal efficiency via a continuous front flow reactor as type A anti-gas filters. The photocatalytic support was firstly characterized by EDX, to confirm its elemental composition.

This work reports on the effect of TiO nanotubes (TiO-NTs), decorated wih platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs), on the removal of bacteria and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Pt-NPs were loaded onto the TiO-NTs using the electrodeposition method at four decoration times (100, 200, 300, and 600 s). The realized Pt-NPs/TiO-NTs nanocomposites were used for the degradation of cyclohexane, a highly toxic and carcinogenic VOC pollutant in the chemical industry.

Although several non-thermal plasmas (NTPs) technologies have been widely investigated in air treatment, very few studies have focused on the inactivation mechanism of viruses by NTPs. Due to its efficiency and environmental compatibility, non-thermal plasma could be considered a promising virus-inactivation technology. Plasma is a partly or fully ionized gas including some species (i.

This work aims to synthesize and characterize a material that can be used as an effective catalyst for photocatalytic application to remove both organic and inorganic compounds from wastewater. In this context, sillenite BiZnO (BZO) in a pure phase was synthesized using the sol-gel method. Before calcination, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was done to determine the temperature of the formation of the sillenite phase, which was found to be 800 °C.

Nowadays, air pollution is an increasingly important topic, as environmental regulations require limiting pollutant emissions. This problem requires new techniques to reduce emissions by either improving the current emission control systems and processes or installing new hybrid treatment systems. These are of broad diversity, and every system has its advantages and disadvantages.

CoBiO (CBO) nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a complexing reagent. For a single phase with the spinel structure, the formed gel was dried and calcined at four temperatures stages. Various methods were used to identify and characterize the obtained spinel, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron micrograph (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopies.

The heterogeneous photocatalysis process has been known to provide significant levels of degradation and mineralization of emerging contaminants including antibiotics. For that, nanoparticle CuCrO (CCO) ceramics were successfully prepared via sol-gel (SG) and co-precipitation (CP) methods to obtain spinel with desired structural features and properties and also to improve the photocatalytic performances. The CCO crystallite phase was produced at 750 °C all ceramics, disregarding the synthesis route.

In this study, we show that the combination of a photocatalytic process (as a pretreatment step) combined with the conventional biological treatment of wastewaters can improve the process and achieve satisfactory efficiency. In this context, Reactive Green 12 (RG-12) solutions were photocatalytically pretreated using TiO-impregnated polyester as supported catalyst under UV light in batch reactor. Photocatalysis as pretreatment (during 4 and 8 h of irradiation) was combined with 7 days of aerobic biological treatment using activated sludge.

The removal of a commercial herbicide, based on clopyralid, by means of Electro-Fenton (EF) was studied using a soil washing effluent obtained using synthetic ground water as washing fluid. From the results, it was observed that the degradation and mineralization yields of clopyralid were high, even without the addition of supporting electrolyte. The groundwater could be then used as a sustainable supporting electrolyte.

In the present study, we propose a new photocatalytic interface prepared by high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), and investigated for the degradation of Reactive Green 12 (RG12) as target contaminant under visible light light-emitting diodes (LEDs) illumination. The CuO/TiO₂ nanoparticulate photocatalyst was sequentially sputtered on polyester (PES). The photocatalyst formulation was optimized by investigating the effect of different parameters such as the sputtering time of CuO, the applied current, and the deposition mode (direct current magnetron sputtering, DCMS or HiPIMS).
