Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the surgical outcomes of simple discectomy versus unilateral posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) without pedicle screw support in patients with single segment lumbar disc herniation (LDH).
  • 60 patients were divided into two groups: 40 underwent simple discectomy and 20 received PLIF with double expandable PEEK cages, and outcomes were measured using VAS and ODI scores before and 18 months post-surgery.
  • Results indicated significant improvements in pain for both groups, with better low back pain relief in the PLIF group, which also maintained disc height and achieved an 80% fusion rate without complications.

Several recent studies have shown that essential hypertension is associated with increased oxidative stress, which may cause hypertension via enhanced oxidation and inactivation of nitric oxide. In this study, we investigated the malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and glutathione levels in newly diagnosed essential hypertensive patients and whether or not there was any effect of antihypertensive treatment with angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist, losartan or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril on plasma malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and glutathione values. We selected 17 patients (F/M: 10/7, mean age: 46.
