Dietary oxidized lipids in redox biology: Oxidized olive oil disrupts lipid metabolism and induces intestinal and hepatic inflammation in C57BL/6J mice.

Olive oil, rich in oleic acid, is often regarded as a healthier alternative to animal fats high in saturated fatty acids and plant oils rich in oxidizable polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, the redox biological implications and health effects of oxidized olive oil (ox-OO) remain underexplored. Our study investigated its impact on lipid metabolism, intestinal and hepatic inflammation, and gut microbiota.

Determination of carcinogenic benzo(a)pyrene in heat treated black tea samples from Turkey by using HPLC-fluorescence detection system.

A rapid, simple, and cost-efficient extraction method was developed for evaluating and screening benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) in tea samples by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with coupled fluorescence detector (FLD) in order to obtain the best extraction performance. In this study, it was observed that when optimized using microwave assisted extraction (MAE) method was performed twice for 2 min using 10 mL n-hexane: acetonitrile (1:3, v/v). The recoveries for BaP in tea were found to be 97 ± 2; 83 ± 8 and 92 ± 6%, respectively.

Ventral-approach augmented nontransected anastomotic (vANTA) urethroplasty for bulbar urethral strictures: a single-center experience.

Background/aim: This study describes ventral-approach augmented nontransected anastomotic (vANTA) urethroplasty and presents the preliminary functional results of patients treated with this technique.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-three patients who underwent vANTA urethroplasty were included in the study. Stricture location, stricture length, preoperative uroflowmetry parameters (maximum flow rate (Qmax) and mean flow rate (Qmean)), preoperative International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 scores, operation time, postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and follow-up periods were recorded.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and migration on tuberculosis notifications: a retrospective analysis with 5-year data from three centers.

Purpose: We aimed to determine the incidence of TB among immigrants and non-immigrants in Sanliurfa, Türkiye between 2018 and 2022 and to examine the effect of COVID-19 on the incidence, location, and drug resistance patterns of tuberculosis.

Methods: This study was a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis in Şanlıurfa Tuberculosis Dispensary between January-2018 and May-2022. Patients were assessed in terms of age, sex, site of tuberculosis, and drug resistance profiles before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alterations of cardiometabolic risk profile in polycystic ovary syndrome: 13 years follow-up in an unselected population.

Purpose: Cardiometabolic risk factors are common in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) during reproductive years. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of aging on cardiometabolic risk of the syndrome by examining women who had previously been diagnosed to have PCOS or to be healthy in an unselected population in 2009.

Participants: Forty-one women with PCOS who were diagnosed and phenotyped according to the Rotterdam criteria and 43 age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy women from the same unselected cohort.

Comparison of Current International Guidelines for the Management of Dyslipidemia.

The dyslipidemia guidelines of the three major societies have been revised recently in light of new evidence. LDL-C is the primary target in the ESC, AHA/ACC/Multisociety and Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) guidelines. Radiological evaluation of the localization of sympathetic ganglia in the cervical region.

Purpose: To determine local variations of cervical sympathetic ganglia (CSG) according to vertebral levels on preoperative neck magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by designating carotid artery (CA) as the standard landmark at the center, in attempts to prevent injury to CSG in the anterior-anterolateral approaches performed in the cervical spinal region.

Materials And Methods: The retrospective study reviewed neck MRI images of 281 patients, of which the images of 231 patients were excluded from the study based on the exclusion criteria. As a result, the MRI images of the remaining 50 patients were included in the study.

Capillary electrophoretic method for the simultaneous determination of nitrate, nitrite and bromate ions in some selected plants.

Background: Teas and traditional herbs are taken as health remedies in most cultures worldwide. Plants often used in the manufacture of teas and herbal remedies can comprise carcinogenic contaminates, such as nitrates, nitrites and bromate ions. In the present study, a quick method was applied for the simultaneous determination of nitrate (NO ), nitrite (NO ) and bromate (BrO ) ions in some selected plants and tea samples using capillary electrophoresis and a Box-Behnken response surface design for method optimization.

Thermomechanical Modeling of Microstructure Evolution Caused by Strain-Induced Crystallization.

The present contribution deals with the thermomechanical modeling of the strain-induced crystallization in unfilled polymers. This phenomenon significantly influences mechanical and thermal properties of polymers and has to be taken into consideration when planning manufacturing processes as well as applications of the final product. In order to simultaneously capture both kinds of effects, the model proposed starts by introducing a triple decomposition of the deformation gradient and furthermore uses thermodynamic framework for material modeling based on the Coleman-Noll procedure and minimum principle of the dissipation potential, which requires suitable assumptions for the Helmholtz free energy and the dissipation potential.

Photophysical Properties of Some Fluorescent Dyes in SDS Micellar Solutions.

Photophysical properties of fluorescent dyes such as Safranin T, Acridine Orange, Pyronin B and Pyronin Y in SDS micelles were examined by using spectroscopic techniques. Firstly, spherical micelles in deionized water were prepared with Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) surfactants and they were transformed into their layered structures (lamellar micelles) by the aid of NaCl (sodium chloride). SEM studies confirmed the transformation of SDS micelles from the spherical structures to the lamellar structures.

Aetiological evaluation of chest pain in childhood and adolescence.

Background: Chest pain, as a common cause of hospital admissions in childhood, necessitates detailed investigations due to a wide range of differential diagnoses. In this study, we aimed to determine the distribution of diseases causing chest pain in children and investigate the clinical characteristics of children with chest pain.

Methods: This study included 782 patients aged between 3 and 18 years who presented to a paediatric cardiology outpatient clinic with chest pain between April 2017 and March 2018.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in drinking water of Samsun and it's surrounding areas, Turkey.

Background: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are considered to be one of the major contaminants of drinking water and natural water bodies. Some of the well documented polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are water pollutants and were considered for analysis in this study included benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[g,h,i]perylene (BgP), and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene (InD). This study aimed at determining the levels of concentrations of basically five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 57 drinking water bodies located around Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Çorum, Amasya, Kastamonu and Sinop provinces.

Isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy due to a jugular foramen schwannoma.

Introduction - Although the involvement of the hypoglossal nerve together with other cranial nerves is common in several pathological conditions of the brain, particularly the brainstem, isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy is a rare condition and a diagnostic challenge. Case presentation - The presented patient arrived to the hospital with a history of slurred speech and an uncomfortable sensation on his tongue. Neurological examination showed left-sided hemiatrophy of the tongue with fasciculations and deviation towards the left side during protrusion.

Multiscale FEM simulations of cross-linked actin network embedded in cytosol with the focus on the filament orientation.

The present contribution focuses on the application of the multiscale finite element method to the modeling of actin networks that are embedded in the cytosol. These cell components are of particular importance with regard to the cell response to external stimuli. The homogenization strategy chosen uses the Hill-Mandel macrohomogeneity condition for bridging 2 scales: the macroscopic scale that is related to the cell level and the microscopic scale related to the representative volume element.

A case of May-Thurner syndrome with inconsistent radiological and surgical findings.

May-Thurner syndrome is the result of compression of the left common iliac vein between the right common iliac artery and the overlying vertebrae. In this case report, we describe an 11-year-old boy presenting with swelling of the left lower extremity. An iliac MR venography showed compression of the left proximal iliac vein between the vertebra and the left iliac artery.

Cerebral atrophy in a vitamin B12-deficient infant of a vegetarian mother.

In developed countries, vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency usually occurs in children, exclusively breastfed ones whose mothers are vegetarian, causing low body stores of vitamin B12. The haematologic manifestation of vitamin B12 deficiency is pernicious anaemia. It is a megaloblastic anaemia with high mean corpuscular volume and typical morphological features, such as hyperlobulation of the nuclei of the granulocytes.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in children: report of three cases.

Purpose: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a condition characterized by varying degrees of headache, nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, focal neurologic deficit, and seizures due to severe systemic hypertension. The knowledge of secondary hypertension in children is most commonly due to renal abnormalities, suggesting that the leading cause of PRES in childhood is renal diseases.

Methods: Three pediatric patients who developed PRES due to various underlying renal diseases were reviewed.

Giant intradiploic calvarial abscess of posterior fossa behaving progressive mass lesion.

A unique case of a large intradiploic abscess involving posterior fossa osseous structures is reported. A 16-year-old boy presented with a hard mass in the calvarium of posterior fossa region, fever and confusion. Radiological examination revealed an intradiploic collection with compression to cerebellum, fourth ventricle and brain stem, resulting in syringomyelia in cervical and thoracic spinal cord.

Pelvic retroperitoneal angioleiomyoma mimicking a uterine mass.

Angioleiomyoma (vascular myoma) is a rare type of leiomyoma originating from smooth muscle cells and containing thick-walled vessels. There are only a few cases of retroperitoneal angioleiomyoma reported in the literature. Herein, we present the ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging and histopathological findings of an asymptomatic patient with a pelvic retroperitoneal angioleiomyoma which radiologically mimicked a uterine mass.
