The aim of this work was to study the influence of different conditions on the 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) number, determined by the extraction and distillation method, as a measure of lipid oxidation in various meats and meat products. Different extracting agents (trichloroacetic acid and perchloric acid), different reaction times (20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min) and the effect of sulfanilamide additions were evaluated. Significant differences with respect to reaction times were found.

Goals: The aim of this study is to investigate whether there were any association between the 102 T/C and -1438 G/A polymorphisms of the 5-HT2A receptor gene and IBS, and abdominal pain, anxiety and depression.

Background: Genes involved in serotonin (5-HT) metabolism are good candidates for the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recently, a silent polymorphism in the 5-HT2A receptor gene was identified that is defined by a T to C transition at position 102.

Findings of renal osteodystrophy in cranial bones are not uncommon and include osteomalacia, osteosclerosis, erosion of the cortical bone, brown tumors and resorption of the lamina dura. However, massive thickening of the cranial vault and facial bones, called uremic leontiasis ossea, have been reported very rare. In the present article, we describe the case of an uncooperative female patient with a brown tumor, involving the left maxillary sinus and massive thickening of the cranial vault and facial bones, secondary to severe secondary hyperparathyroidism during 8 years of regular hemodialysis treatment.

Objectives: Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of still unknown etiology, characterized by endothelial cell injury/dysfunction and thrombosis and/or aneurysm of large blood vessels. Thrombophilia may play a role in the pathogenesis of thrombosis in BD. The common inherited gene defects, factor V (FV) 1691A (Leiden) and prothrombin (PT) 20210A, are known risk factors for thrombosis.

Aim: The Maastricht II criteria suggest the use of amoxicillin and clarithromycin in addition to a proton pump inhibitor over 7-10 d as a first line therapy in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori). For each proton pump inhibitor, various rates of eradication have been reported. The present study was to compare the efficacy of different proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole, lansoprazole and pantoprazole in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin in the first line eradication of H pylori and to investigate the success of H pylori eradication in our district.

The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the possible role of adenosine deaminase (AD) and xanthine oxidase (XO) in the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and the effect of erdosteine in decreasing the toxicity. The intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin (7 mg kg(-1) body weight) induced a significant increase in plasma creatinine level and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and plasma and damaged renal tissue activities of AD and XO in rats. Co-treatment with erdosteine (10 mg kg(-1)day(-1)) attenuated the increase in the plasma creatinine and BUN levels, and significantly prevented the increase in tissue and plasma AD and XO activities (P<0.

A4070G (His 1299 Arg) polymorphism in exon 13 of factor V gene can influence factor V levels and contribute to the activated protein C resistance. We are presenting our data concerning Turkish population and postulate that homozygosity for the HR2 haplotype may be an important risk factor for thrombosis.

Two cases of neuro-Behcet's disease with isolated, solitary fronto-temporal and mesencephalic lesions respectively are reported. The cases were misdiagnosed as cerebral tumor. The postoperative outcome of the first patient was not satisfactory as he developed hemispheric edema.

Objectives: Serotonin is a key mediator of intestinal peristalsis, and after it is secreted, it is effectively cleansed from the neuronal gap by means of a high affinity substance called serotonin transporter (SERT), which depends on the Na+ and Cl- ions localized in the presynaptic neuronal membranes. The aim of this study was to investigate SERT polymorphism in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Methods: SERT gene polymorphism was assessed by polymerase chain reaction on DNA chains obtained from leukocytes in serum samples from 54 patients diagnosed with IBS and 91 healthy subjects.

Bismuth subcitrate is a known nephrotoxic agent that may lead to acute oliguric renal failure when ingested in toxic doses. We report a 17-year-old girl who was admitted to the emergency room with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and anuria. She had taken 25 tablets containing 300 mg bismuth subcitrate (total 7.

Background: Ineffective erythropoiesis and intramedullary hemolysis are the two important results of pernicious anemia. Hemolysis is one of the risk factors in the formation of gallbladder stones.

Patients And Methods: The frequency of gallstones was searched in 59 patients with pernicious anemia and in 54 healthy subjects.

Data from continuous measurements of SO2 NO x , suspended particulate matter (SPM) and meteorological parameters at seven sites around a highly industrialized region in the Aegean coast of Turkey, between July 15, 1991 to July 31, 1992 were used to evaluate spatial and temporal variations of air quality parameters. Low annual averages and insignificant differences between day and night concentrations were observed at stations far from sources. At stations close to sources, annual average concentrations were high and diurnal patterns were significant.

Two citric acid-producing strains of the mould Aspergillus niger, cultivated on different sporulation media recommended and well-tried for Aspergilli, showed only poor formation of conidia the harvesting of which was difficult. Starting with a sporulation medium of MOYER et al. and substituting some of the constituents and determining their optimum concentrations, two semi-synthetic media were developed, containing glycerol and/or citric acid.
