Organophosphate(OPH) compounds are cholinesteraseinhibiting chemicals used as pesticide. Pancreatitis secondary to malathion toxicity is rare and toxic hepatitis has been reported in only one case. In this paper, we report the case of the combination of acute pancreatitis and toxic hepatitis, which developed in a 30-year old farm worker and the mechanism is discussed in this first report of its kind.

Metabolic systems engineering is being used to redirect microbial metabolism for the overproduction of chemicals of interest with the aim of transforming microbial hosts into cellular factories. In this study, a genome-based metabolic systems engineering approach was designed and performed to improve biopolymer biosynthesis capability of a moderately halophilic bacterium Halomonas smyrnensis AAD6 producing levan, which is a fructose homopolymer with many potential uses in various industries and medicine. For this purpose, the genome-scale metabolic model for AAD6 was used to characterize the metabolic resource allocation, specifically to design metabolic engineering strategies for engineered bacteria with enhanced levan production capability.

Capsaicin (CAP) and alpha-tocopherol (TOC) have antioxidant properties. We investigated effects of CAP and TOC on mitochondrial oxidative stress and mitochondrial bioenergetics in liver of mice fed HFD. AST, ALT, glucose, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index ((HOMA-IR)) and mitochondrial oxidative stress parameters increased, whereas oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) enzymes, tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) enzymes, ATP level and mitochondrial metabolic function (MTT) decreased in mice fed a HFD compared to the fed a standard diet (NC).

Background: As KATP channel mutations are the most common cause of neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) and patients with these mutations can be treated with oral sulfonylureas, empiric therapy is a common practice for NDM patients.

Case Presentation: A non-syndromic, small for gestational age baby born to first-degree consanguineous parents was diagnosed with NDM. Because of hypo- and hyperglycemic episodes and variability in insulin requirement, we initiated a trial of glibenclamide, with a presumptive diagnosis of NDM caused by a KATP channel mutation.
