Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a disease with a severe course including acute viral haemorrhagic fever, ecchymosis, thrombocytopenia, hepatic function disorder and high mortality. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme located in neutrophil granulocytes and plays an important role in the destruction of phagocytosed micro-organisms. The aim of this study was to analyse MPO enzyme activity in CCHF cases compared with a control group.

Effects of microarterial anastomosis torsion on survival of oblique groin flap in rats.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pericyte coverage (PC) of differentiated tumor microvessels on the prognosis of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC).

Methods: Samples from 2 cohorts of patients with CCRCC (101 Asian patients and 524 US patients) were prepared using 2 different histologic approaches: routine sectioning versus tissue microarray. Then, the samples were immunohistochemically doubled-stained for a pericyte marker (alpha smooth muscle actin [α-SMA]) and a differentiated vessel marker (cluster of differentiation 34 [CD34]), followed by multispectral image capturing and computerized image analyses to quantify the microvessel density (MVD) and the PC of differentiated vessels.

Mastoid fascia tissue as a graft for restoration of nasal contour deformities.

A wide variety of autologous grafts have been used for the coverage of contour deformities in rhinoplasty. Mastoid fascia tissue (MFT) grafts are easy to harvest and very versatile, and the resulting donor site scar is not visible. Natural looking results can be obtained with MFT grafts when used for the coverage of dorsal irregularities, for dorsal augmentation, for camouflaging abnormalities related to skin atrophy, and even for tip-of-nose coverage and tip augmentation.

Two novel deletions in hypotonia-cystinuria syndrome.

Hypotonia-cystinuria syndrome (HCS) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by combined deletions of SLC3A1 and PREPL. Clinical features include cystinuria, neonatal hypotonia with spontaneous improvement, poor feeding in neonates, hyperphagia in childhood, growth hormone deficiency, and variable cognitive problems. Only 14 families with 6 different deletions have been reported.

[Chondroblastoma in the anterior cruciate ligament origo: a case report].

Chondroblastoma is a rarely seen cartilage originated tumor. It is mostly localized in the epiphysis of long bones. In this article, we present an 18-year-old male case in whom the tumor was located in the right distal femoral lateral condyle and destroyed anterior cruciate ligament origo.

The role of proton MR spectroscopy and apparent diffusion coefficient values in the diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules: preliminary results.

Purpose: Performance of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in the diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules.

Method: In a retrospective study with malignant nodules of 14 patients, H-MRS and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) were performed. Choline (Cho) peak, Cho/creatine (Cr) ratio, and ADC values of malignant nodules were correlated with the five benign nodules and four normal-appearing thyroid lobe parenchymata.

The role of group education on quality of life in patients with a stoma.

Stoma education has been traditionally given in a one-to-one setting. Since 2007, daily group education programmes were organised for stoma patients and their relatives by our stoma therapy unit. The programmes included lectures on stoma and stoma care, and social activities in which patients shared their experiences with each other.

In sporadic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC), the von Hippel Lindau (VHL) gene is inactivated by mutation or methylation in the majority of primary (P) tumors. Due to differing effects of wild-type (WT) and mutant (MT) VHL gene on downstream signaling pathways regulating angiogenesis, VHL gene status could impact clinical outcome. In CCRCC, comparative genomic hybridization analysis studies have reported genetic differences between paired P and metastatic (M) tumors.

Accelerated idioventricular rhythm associated with propranolol treatment in a child.

Accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR) is a ventricular arrhythmia most commonly seen in adults with underlying cardiac disease. It is important to establish the diagnosis when it occurs to differentiate this benign phenomenon from dangerous ventricular tachycardia. We present the case of a healthy child who developed episodes of AIVR associated with propranolol treatment.

Evaluation of the future atherosclerotic heart disease with oxidative stress and carotid artery intima media thickness in gestational diabetes mellitus.

Background And Objective: In this study our aim was to evaluate paraoxonase (PON1) activity and free sulfhydryl groups (-SH) as antioxidative parameters and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) as oxidative parameter in the serum of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and determine their relation with the degree of subclinical atherosclerosis.

Material And Methods: Serum samples from 39 pregnant women complicated with GDM and 40 healthy pregnant women were collected for the analysis of oxidative markers. Common carotid artery intima media thickness (CIMT) was measured for both groups to assess future atherosclerotic heart disease risk.

The impact of location and number of cores on the diagnostic accuracy of renal mass biopsy: an ex vivo study.

Objective: To evaluate whether renal mass biopsy (RMB) biopsy location or number affected diagnostic accuracy in a prospective ex vivo study.

Methods: Three cores (1 central and 2 peripheral) were obtained for histologic processing from each of 48 renal masses after nephrectomy. Individual biopsy cores were evaluated independently for tumor subtype and grade by a single, blinded GU pathologist.

Brachialis muscle transfer to the forearm for the treatment of deformities in spastic cerebral palsy.

The use of the brachialis muscle for tendon transfers in cerebral palsy has not been described previously. In this study, the brachialis muscle was used for transfer in 11 patients with spastic cerebral palsy for the restoration of forearm supination, wrist extension, or finger extension. Four patients underwent brachialis rerouting supinatorplasty.

Lower eyelid reconstruction in a paediatric face: a one-stage aesthetic approach using the versatile temporoparietal fascia flap.

There are many different lower eyelid reconstruction techniques defined in the literature. Almost all of the published techniques have been described on elderly patients and use upper eyelid, periorbital or facial tissues as donor sites. However, in case of a paediatric patient or a young adult who has a crease-free and scarless face, camouflage of the facial donor-site scar is usually impossible.

Treatment of capitellar osteochondritis dissecans with a tendon graft: a case report.

A 14-year-old girl who was engaged in farming was admitted with the complaints of right elbow pain and limited range of motion in the elbow joint. Plain radiograph revealed capitellar osteochondritis dissecans. After the loose fragment was removed from the capitellum and the defect was curetted, a palmaris longus tendon graft harvested from the same hand was implanted into the capitellar defect.

Background And Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of smoking on the relationship between interleukin-1 (IL-1β) and oxidation in patients with periodontitis and response to nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

Material And Methods: Data were obtained from 30 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis (15 smokers and 15 nonsmokers) and from 10 periodontally healthy controls. IL-1β level, total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were recorded in gingival crevicular fluid.

Determination of the effects of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) 1B and ADH1C polymorphisms on alcohol dependence in Turkey.
