What's in a Name? Health Care Providers' Perceptions of Pediatric Pain Patients Based on Diagnostic Labels.

Objectives: Diagnostic labels can help patients better understand their symptoms and can influence providers' treatment planning and patient interactions. Recurrent pain is common in childhood; however, there are various diagnostic labels used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of diagnostic labels on pediatric health care providers' perceptions of pediatric chronic pain patients.

Shared decision-making in pediatric otolaryngology: Parent, physician and observational perspectives.

Objective: To describe physician and parent behavior during pediatric otolaryngology surgical consultations, and to assess whether perceptions of shared decision-making and observed behavior are related.

Methods: Parents of 126 children less than 6-years of age who underwent consultation for adeontonsillectomy or tympanostomy tube insertion were prospectively enrolled. Parents completed the Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire-Patient version (SDM-Q-9), while surgeons completed the Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire-Physician version (SDM-Q-Doc) after the consultation.

Parental decision making in pediatric otoplasty: The role of shared decision making in parental decisional conflict and decisional regret.

Objectives/hypothesis: To date, there has been little research on shared decision making and decisional outcomes in pediatric surgery. The objectives of this study were to describe the level of decisional conflict and decisional regret experienced by parents considering otoplasty for their children, and to determine if they are related to perceptions of shared decision making.

Objective: To evaluate parental recall of surgical risks and benefits in pediatric otolaryngology and to assess for factors that may influence recall.

Parental knowledge in pediatric otolaryngology surgical consultations: A qualitative content analysis.

Objective: To understand the source of parents' knowledge prior to and desire for further information following pediatric otolaryngology surgical consultations.

Methods: Mixed-methods approach using descriptive and qualitative content analysis of interviews with parents following otolaryngology consultations for children under the age of 6 years was performed. The children were being seen for either tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnea, otitis media, and/or sinusitis/nasal obstruction.

Parents' treatment of their children's pain at home: pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches.

Introduction: During childhood, pain often is experienced on a nearly daily basis. This study focuses on pain alleviation techniques provided by parents, because children's painful experiences are most often treated at home. Hypotheses addressed various factors that can influence use of pain alleviation techniques, including parents' level of catastrophizing about their children's pain, children's age, and conversations with health care professionals.

Parents' initial perceptions of multidisciplinary care for pediatric chronic pain.

Chronic and recurrent pain is experienced by many children and adolescents. Treatment of chronic pain using a multidisciplinary approach has been found to be effective for treatment of chronic pain. Parent satisfaction with treatment and treatment providers highly correlates to children's treatment adherence.

Objective: School functioning is among the most important life domains impacted by chronic pain. This review provides a summary of the measures currently used by researchers to assess school functioning in children with chronic pain.
