Over the past decade, hip-preservation strategies have gained momentum, resulting in a notable increase in the use of hip arthroscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in hip-related pathology. In this 3-part series, the authors will aim to comprehensively review the fundamentals of hip arthroscopy in the setting of femoroacetabular impingement. This Technical Note will thoroughly review the senior authors' approach to managing the central compartment of the hip in the context of femoroacetabular impingement.

Selective Reduction of Esters to Access Aldehydes Using Fiddler Crab-Type Boranes.

The partial reduction of esters to aldehydes is a fundamentally important transformation for the synthesis of numerous fine chemicals and consumer goods. However, despite the many efforts, limitations have persisted, such as competing overreduction, low reproducibility, use of exigent reaction conditions and hazardous chemicals. Here, we report a novel catalyst family with a unique steric design which promotes the catalytic partial reduction of esters with unprecedented, near-perfect selectivity and efficiency.

Routes of importation and spatial dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 variants during localized interventions in Chile.

Human mobility is strongly associated with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 via air travel on an international scale and with population mixing and the number of people moving between locations on a local scale. However, these conclusions are drawn mostly from observations in the context of the global north where international and domestic connectivity is heavily influenced by the air travel network; scenarios where land-based mobility can also dominate viral spread remain understudied. Furthermore, research on the effects of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) has mostly focused on national- or regional-scale implementations, leaving gaps in our understanding of the potential benefits of implementing NPIs at higher granularity.

Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies of Meniscus Root Tears: A Scoping Review.

Background: Meniscus root tears comprise 10% to 21% of all meniscal tears. These tears alter knee biomechanics, elevating contact pressure, akin to a meniscectomy. Consequently, they are linked to advanced joint degeneration and cartilage damage in the affected compartment.

Comparing Severity of Knee Arthritis at an Urban Center by Insurance Type Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty.

This study compares radiographic osteoarthritis severity prior with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) by payer type. Five hundred and three primary TKAs were included. Preoperative radiographs were scored by Ahlback, Kellgren-Lawrence (KL), and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) classifications.

Methods: A literature search was performed according to the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines using the Scopus, PubMed, and Embase computerized databases. Clinical studies evaluating partial meniscectomy or meniscal repair for HCTs were included.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair Results in Similar Patient-Reported Outcome Measures as Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Systematic Review of Prospective Comparative Studies.

Purpose: To investigate the patient-reported outcomes (PROs), knee stability, and complications in prospective comparative studies of patients undergoing augmented anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair compared with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).

Methods: A literature search was performed according to the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Human clinical studies of Level I-II evidence comparing PROs, knee stability, and complications after ACL repair and reconstruction were included, and a qualitative analysis was performed.

Accuracy assessment of ChatGPT responses to frequently asked questions regarding anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

Background: The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has allowed users to have access to large sources of information in a chat-like manner. Thereby, we sought to evaluate ChatGPT-4 response's accuracy to the 10 patient most frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery.

Methods: A list of the top 10 FAQs pertaining to ACL surgery was created after conducting a search through all Sports Medicine Fellowship Institutions listed on the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) websites.

Purpose: To systematically review the contemporary literature and evaluate patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), functional knee measures, and the incidence of complications in patients aged 50 years and older undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) at short- to mid-term follow-up.

Methods: A literature search was conducted across the PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases, spanning from database inception to November 2023, in accordance with the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines. The inclusion criteria consisted of clinical studies reporting PROMs, measures of knee stability, and complication rates after ACLR in patients aged 50 years and older with minimum 2-year follow-up.

Degradation of lubricating molecules in synovial fluid alters chondrocyte sensitivity to shear strain.

Articular joints facilitate motion and transfer loads to underlying bone through a combination of cartilage tissue and synovial fluid, which together generate a low-friction contact surface. Traumatic injury delivered to cartilage and the surrounding joint capsule causes secretion of proinflammatory cytokines by chondrocytes and the synovium, triggering cartilage matrix breakdown and impairing the ability of synovial fluid to lubricate the joint. Once these inflammatory processes become chronic, posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) development begins.

Scoring System to Evaluate Risk of Nonoperative Management Failure in Children With Intussusception.

Introduction: Typical first-line management of children with intussusception is enema reduction; however, failure necessitates surgical intervention. The number of attempts varies by clinician, and predictors of failed nonoperative management are not routinely considered in practice. The purpose of this study is to create a scoring system that predicts risk of nonoperative failure and need for surgical intervention.

Association between the home-to-healthcare center distance and hearing aid abandonment among older adults.

Background: Access to audiology services for older adults residing in sparsely populated regions is often limited compared to those in central urban areas. The geographic accessibility to follow-up care, particularly the influence of distance, may contribute to an increased risk of hearing aid abandonment.

The effects of an IV fluid bolus on mitral annular velocity and the assessment of diastolic function: a prospective non-randomized study.

Background: Abnormal diastolic function is an independent predictor of adverse postoperative outcomes. Mitral annular tissue Doppler velocity (e') is a key parameter for assessing diastolic function. The purpose of this study was to confirm that an acute increase in preload did not significantly impact the intraoperative measurement of e' and secondarily evaluate the impact of this acute intravascular volume increase on the clinical assessment of diastolic function using a previously described simplified algorithm.

Photocatalytic degradation of acid yellow 36 with calcined titania-hydroxyapatite-cuo xerogels.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOP), using semiconductor (SC) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composites, are promising due to the synergy of photocatalytic and adsorption properties. Still, dye removal efficiency of composites based on HA-SC remains low, because most of the research reported consider single SC materials. In this work, nanocrystalline xerogels of titanium oxide (TiO) with copper oxide (CuO) and HA were synthesized by the sol-gel process.

My Health in My Hands: Improving Medication Abortion Knowledge and Closing Disparities with a Community-Led Media Intervention.

Purpose: Inaccurate beliefs about medication abortion (MA) are common. This study evaluated pilot data from a community-led media intervention designed to increase MA knowledge among Black and Latinx women in Georgia.

Methods: Participants (=855) viewed the intervention video and completed pre-post surveys.

Comparing contamination rates of sterile-covered and uncovered transducers for ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines.

Introduction: Physicians frequently use point-of-care ultrasound for intravenous access and bloodwork in the ED. Recently, AIUM and ACEP released recommendations on ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous lines (USPIVs), but there are no agreed upon standardized policies. We sought to determine whether the use of sterile-covered transducers (SCT) decreases the rate of contamination when compared to uncovered transducers (UCT) after standard low-level disinfection (LLD).

Aims: This study aimed to investigate whether monocyte dysregulation and hyperinflammation serve as predictive markers for mortality in young patients with SARS-CoV-2 severe pneumonia.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary-level public University Hospital in Colombia. Forty young adults (18-50 years of age) with severe pneumonia and SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by qPCR, were enrroled.

A Novel Algorithm for Improving the Prehospital Diagnostic Accuracy of ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

Introduction: Early detection of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) on the prehospital electrocardiogram (ECG) improves patient outcomes. Current software algorithms optimize sensitivity but have a high false-positive rate. The authors propose an algorithm to improve the specificity of STEMI diagnosis in the prehospital setting.

Transmission of optical communication signals through ring core fiber using perfect vortex beams.

Orbital angular momentum can be used to implement high capacity data transmission systems that can be applied for classical and quantum communications. Here we experimentally study the generation and transmission properties of the so-called perfect vortex beams and the Laguerre-Gaussian beams in ring-core optical fibers. Our results show that when using a single preparation stage, the perfect vortex beams present less ring-radius variation that allows coupling of higher optical power into a ring core fiber.

Development of Spatio-Temporal Land Use Regression Models for Fine Particulate Matter and Wood-Burning Tracers in Temuco, Chile.

Biomass burning is common in much of the world, and in some areas, residential wood-burning has increased. However, air pollution resulting from biomass burning is an important public health problem. A sampling campaign was carried out between May 2017 and July 2018 in over 64 sites in four sessions, to develop a spatio-temporal land use regression (LUR) model for fine particulate matter (PM) and wood-burning tracers levoglucosan and soluble potassium (K) in a city heavily impacted by wood-burning.
