Obesity is an independent risk factor for pre-transplant portal vein thrombosis in liver recipients.

Background: Portal vein thrombosis is a frequent complication in end-stage cirrhosis with a considerable peri-operative risk for liver transplant candidates. We aimed to characterize the pre-transplant portal vein thrombosis in a cohort of liver transplant recipients, and to identify independent risk factors for this complication.

Methods: 380 consecutive primary orthotopic liver transplants were performed in the Digestive Surgery Department of "12 de Octubre" Hospital (Madrid, Spain), between January 2001 and December 2006.

Acute myeloid leukemia and transcription factors: role of erythroid Krüppel-like factor (EKLF).

We have investigated the role of erythroid transcription factors mRNA expression in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in the context of cytogenetic and other prognostic molecular markers, such as FMS-like Tyrosine Kinase 3 (FLT3), Nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1), and CCAAT/enhance-binding protein α (CEBPA) mutations. Further validation of Erythroid Krüppel-like Factor (EKLF) mRNA expression as a prognostic factor was assessed.We evaluated GATA binding protein 1 (GATA1), GATA binding protein 2 (GATA2), EKLF and Myeloproliferative Leukemia virus oncogen homology (cMPL) gene mRNA expression in the bone marrow of 65 AML patients at diagnosis, and assessed any correlation with NPM1, FLT3 and CEBPA mutations.

Clinical and prognostic implications of atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

Aim: To study a cohort of consecutive patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and compare the outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients vs patients in sinus rhythm (SR).

Methods: All consecutive patients undergoing TAVI in our hospital were included. The AF group comprised patients in AF at the time of TAVI or with history of AF, and were compared with the SR group.

The availability of high quality, well-characterized antibodies for molecular and cellular neuroscience studies is important. However, not all available antibodies are rigorously evaluated, nor are limitations of particular antibodies often reported. We have examined a panel of currently available mGluR1 antibodies and have identified which ones are selective for use by western blots and immunocytochemistry.

Background: Vascular complications, such as HAT, are an important cause of graft loss and recipient mortality. We aimed to characterize post-transplant thrombotic events in a cohort of liver transplant recipients, and identify independent risk factors for these complications.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the DNA-methylation signature in classic chronic Philadelphia negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), polycythaemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythaemia (ET), in order to obtain a global insight into DNA-methylation changes associated with these malignancies.

Methods: Thirty-five MPN samples from 11 ET JAK2 V617F, 12 ET JAK2 wild type (WT) and 12 PV JAK2 V617F patients as well as 12 from healthy donors were analysed. DNA samples extracted from whole peripheral blood were hybridised to the 'HumanMethylation27 DNA Analysis BeadChip.

Background: Fms-like tyrosine kinase-3 (FLT3) gene mutations are frequent in acute promyelocytic leukemia but their prognostic value is not well established.

Design And Methods: We evaluated FLT3-internal tandem duplication and FLT3-D835 mutations in patients treated with all-trans retinoic acid and anthracycline-based chemotherapy enrolled in two subsequent trials of the Programa de Estudio y Tratamiento de las Hemopatías Malignas (PETHEMA) and Hemato-Oncologie voor Volwassenen Nederland (HOVON) groups between 1996 and 2005.

Results: FLT3-internal tandem duplication and FLT3-D835 mutation status was available for 306 (41%) and 213 (29%) patients, respectively.

Apoptosis is likely to be activated in response to these stresses. Apoptosis due to intrinsic stresses is regulated by pro- and antiapoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family.

While bulk mechanical and chemical properties of the matrix have been shown to influence various cellular functions, the role of matrix interfacial properties on stem cell behavior is unclear. Here, we report the striking effect of matrix interfacial hydrophobicity on stem cell adhesion, motility, cytoskeletal organization, and differentiation.

Differential expression of JAK2 and Src kinase genes in response to hydroxyurea treatment in polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia.

This study investigates the differential gene expression profile of JAK2(V617F)-positive myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) patients, with and without response to hydroxyurea (HU) treatment. Twenty-one polycythemia vera, 28 essential thrombocythemia, eight secondary erythrocytosis, and 30 controls were studied. Thirty-four genes were overexpressed in patients who did not respond to HU.

Study of DQE dependence with beam quality on GE essential mammography flat panel.

This paper deals with the analysis of the behavior of objective image quality parameters for the new GE Senographe Essential FFDM system, in particular its dependence with beam quality. The detector consists of an indirect conversion a-Si flat panel coupled to a CsI:Tl scintillator. The system under study has gone through a series of relevant modifications in flat panel with respect to the previous model (GE Senographe DS 2000).

[Association of hyperhomocysteinemia with liver steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C].

Background And Objectives: Liver steatosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is related to viral and metabolic factors and likely to genetic factors. The aim of this study was to know if hyperhomocysteinemia and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR)-C677T polymorphisms are associated with liver steatosis in nonalcoholic patients with CHC.

Patients And Method: In 54 consecutive patients with CHC, alcohol consumption less than 40g/week, and no other causes of liver disease, a liver biopsy was performed.

Po(IV) in water has been studied by means of Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations. A new Trouiller-Martins pseudopotential for Po(IV) has been developed. This pseudopotential was tested by comparing the structure and energetics of small [Po(H(2)O)(n)(OH)(m)](4-m) clusters optimized quantum-mechanically.

Purpose: HER2 amplification occurs in 18% to 27% of gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancers. Lapatinib, a potent ATP-competitive inhibitor simultaneously inhibits both EGFR and HER2. To explore the role of HER family biology in upper gastrointestinal cancers, we evaluated the effect of lapatinib, erlotinib, and trastuzumab in a panel of molecularly characterized human upper gastrointestinal cancer cell lines and xenografts.

A proposed approach for the selection of the proper surgical therapy to obtain an adequate margin of resection in locally advanced ultra-low rectal cancer after modern preoperative CRX management.

Objective: We performed a retrospective review to identify objective factors that could facilitate the surgeon's decision regarding the feasibility of an adequate resection with a margin of< 2 cm from the dentate line. We could not find clear guidelines for clinicians regarding the use of close margins for sphincter saving surgery following chemoradiation (CRX). We proposed what state of the art imaging tools are potentially useful to identify tumor downstage following preoperative CRX and aid in the development of guidelines.

Living donor liver transplantation: usefulness of hemostatic and prothrombotic screening in potential donors.

Bleeding and thrombosis are serious complications of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). The aim of this paper was to describe the results of a screening for coagulation disorders, including for thrombophilic factors, in potential living liver graft donors and to evaluate thrombotic and bleeding events in donors and recipients, during and after the procedure. From January 2001 to January 2007, 41 LDLTs were performed at our institution.

Background: Operation Smile is a humanitarian volunteer-based organization that provides cleft care around the world. Successful primary surgery is the key to improving the quality of life of patients with oral clefts. A cleft surgery outcomes database and evaluation system has been developed and implemented.

Long-term follow-up of donor chimerism and tolerance after human liver transplantation.

We aimed to quantify peripheral donor chimerism (DC) and to analyze its association with graft and recipient outcome. Forty-two liver transplant recipients and their respective donors were studied, providing a total of 148 posttransplantation serum samples. DC was assessed with real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect polymorphic markers.
