Strategies to amplify whole-body glucose disposal are key therapies to treat type 2 diabetes. Mice that over-express glucose transporter 4 (Glut4) in skeletal muscle, heart, and adipose tissue (G4Tg) exhibit increased fasting glucose disposal and thus lowered blood glucose. Intriguingly, G4Tg mice also exhibit improved insulin-stimulated suppression of endogenous glucose production even though Glut4 is not present in the liver.

The aim of this open-label pilot trial was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of long-term LES stimulation using a permanently implanted LES stimulator in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

In this work, we illustrate the ability of the prokaryotic potassium channel KcsA to assemble into a variety of supramolecular clusters of defined sizes containing the tetrameric KcsA as the repeating unit. Such clusters, particularly the larger ones, are markedly detergent-labile and thus, disassemble readily upon exposure to the detergents commonly used in protein purification or conventional electrophoresis analysis. This is a reversible process, as cluster re-assembly occurs upon detergent removal and without the need of added membrane lipids.

A novel and simple preconcentration step for aqueous micellar solutions of the common cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) has been developed. The procedure is based on the formation of another phase (a micro-droplet), not soluble in water, in which analytes (originally present in the aqueous solution) experience preconcentration. The method resembles to that of classical coacervation, but it does not require high ionic strengths neither acidic pH values.

The sensory circuit of the stretch reflex arc is composed of intrafusal muscle fibers and their innervating proprioceptive neurons that convert mechanical information regarding muscle length and tension into action potentials that synapse onto the homonymous motoneurons in the ventral spinal cord which innervate the extrafusal fibers of the same muscle. To date, the in vitro synaptic connection between proprioceptive sensory neurons and spinal motoneurons has not been demonstrated. A functional in vitro system demonstrating this connection would enable the understanding of feedback by the integration of sensory input into the spinal reflex arc.

Antibiotic resistance has been evaluated among 36 Gram negative and anaerobic bacilli (10 Bacteroides, 11 Prevotella, 7 Porphyromonas and 8 Fusobacterium strains) isolated from clinical cases of caprine and ovine footrot (necrotic pododermatitis). The initial analysis on this bacterial consortium evaluates the relationships existing among antimicrobial resistance determinants, phenotype expression and mobilization potential. The Bacteroides strains were generally resistant to penicillins, first-generation cephalosporins, tetracycline and erythromycin, and expressed low level of β-lactamase activity.
