However, CD-DST is often a culture method, and contamination is a serious problem, especially in the case of colorectal cancer, which is contaminated by enteric bacteria. It has been reported that the success rate of CD-DST is 64.

Prosthetic repair of an incarcerated groin hernia with small intestinal resection.

Purpose: No consensus has been reached on the use of prostheses in a potentially infected operating field. In this study, we evaluated the validity of a mesh prosthesis for the repair of incarcerated groin hernias with intestinal resection.

Methods: Twenty-seven patients underwent operations for correction of incarcerated groin hernias with small intestinal resection at our hospital between January 2000 and March 2010.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma with a giant hemangioma.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare hepatic mesenchymal tumor. We report a case of hepatic angiomyolipoma that was successfully resected along with a giant hemangioma. A 53-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation of a liver tumor in segment 4.

We describe a patient with extrahepatic portal venous obstruction due to a giant hepatic hemangioma associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. A 67-year-old woman presented with upper abdominal distension and appetite loss. The medical history was not relevant to the current disorder.

Laparoscopic surgery improves blood glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance following distal gastrectomy for cancer.

Background: Prevention of blood glucose elevation and insulin resistance could be more pronounced in patients undergoing laparoscopic rather than open gastrectomy.

Methods: Fifty-seven patients underwent distal gastrectomy by either laparoscopy (n = 36) or an open approach (n = 21). Blood glucose, serum insulin, and the daily insulin secretion rate (urinary C-peptide) were measured.

Case of biliary cystadenocarcinoma with intracystic bleeding.

Biliary cystadenocarcinomas are rare cystic tumors arising from the biliary epithelium. Symptoms vary and are sometimes absent. Most lesions are found incidentally during diagnostic radiologic procedures or surgical exploration for unrelated conditions.

Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and value of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) for early stage gastric cancer (stages IA, IB, and II).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively assessed 101 cases treated by LADG and compared to 49 contemporaneous cases treated by open distal gastrectomy (DG) between 2001 and 2006. Clinical variables, such as tumor diameter, operation time, blood loss, number of lymph nodes dissected, and length of stay were investigated.
