Our study aimed to test the potential of Citrus oils in protecting against paracetamol (PAR)-induced hepatotoxicity. The essential oils of Pineapple sweet orange (OO), Murcott mandarin (MO), Red grapefruit (GO), and Oval kumquat (KO) were investigated using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Article Synopsis
  • Paracetamol overdose is a major cause of liver damage globally, prompting research for safer alternative treatments beyond -acetyl cysteine.
  • Four types of citrus juices were tested for their potential benefits against paracetamol-induced liver toxicity, with about 40 metabolites identified, primarily phenolic compounds.
  • The study demonstrated that these citrus juices could effectively repair liver damage in a rat model, likely due to the synergistic effects of key metabolites found in the juices.
