Early life unpredictability is associated with both physical and mental health outcomes throughout the life course. Here, we classified adverse experiences based on the timescale on which they are likely to introduce variability in children's environments: variations unfolding over short time scales (e.g.

Article Synopsis
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is linked to high-risk sexual behaviors and health issues, often examined separately without understanding their developmental origins.
  • The study investigates how BPD might be a result of prioritizing immediate reproductive goals over long-term health due to early life adversities, which provide short-term reproductive advantages at the cost of well-being.
  • Analyzing data from nearly 30,149 participants, researchers found those with BPD experienced more early life adversity and had poorer health outcomes, suggesting a connection between early experiences and BPD-related behaviors.

The experience of agency refers to the phenomenal experience of being the causal source of one's own actions, and through them, the course of events in the outside world. Self-disturbance is recognized as a key symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Although it is the source of significant distress and significant costs to society, it is still poorly specified. In addition, current research and models on the etiology of BPD do not provide sufficient evidence or predictions about who is at risk of developing BPD and self-disturbance, and why.

Checking behavior is a natural and adaptive strategy for resolving uncertainty in everyday situations. Here, we aimed at investigating the psychological drivers of checking and its regulation by uncertainty, in non-clinical participants and controlled experimental settings. We found that the sensitivity of participants' explicit confidence judgments to actual performance (explicit metacognition) predicted the extent to which their checking strategy was regulated by uncertainty.

Stress reactivity is a complex phenomenon associated with multiple and multimodal expressions and functions. Herein, we hypothesized that compared with healthy controls (HCs), adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) would exhibit a stronger response to stressors and a deficit in self-perception of stress due to their lack of insight. Twenty adolescents with BPD and 20 matched HCs performed a socially evaluated mental arithmetic test to induce stress.

Background: The short form of the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) is a brief multi-dimensional measure which explores the metacognitive processes and beliefs about worry and cognition that are central to the vulnerability and maintenance of emotional disorders.

Aims: The first aim of the study was to create and validate a French version of the MCQ-30 in a non-clinical and a clinical sample of depressed in-patients.

Method: A French adaptation of the MCQ-30 was administered to a sample of 467 individuals from the general population and 73 hospitalized patients with major depressive disorder.
