Background: Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with increased complications and worse outcomes in a variety of surgical diseases, however, SMI as a risk factor in thoracic surgery patients is incompletely understood. We aimed to investigate if comorbid SMI would impact mortality and morbidity following lung cancer resection.
Methods: We identified 615 patients from the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) database at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (January 2013-June 2021) who underwent lung cancer resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Plastic pollution is an ever-increasing threat globally and poor waste management in South Africa has caused an increase in plastic leakage into the environment. Plastic waste in the environment are categorized according to size and plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size are regarded as microplastics (MPs), and little to no research has been done on MPs pollution within the marine coastal environment and rocky shores in South Africa. Sampling was done in February 2020 at a rocky shore within Simon's Town Marina, Cape Town.

An exclusive reliance on gene-agnostic methods of genomic investigation could limit the identification of relevant genes associated with polygenic diseases such as Alzheimer disease (AD). To overcome such potential restriction, we developed a gene-constrained analytical method that considers only moderate- and high-risk variants that affect gene coding sequences.

More recently, healthcare professionals have targeted this space as a means to provide medical education and advice. With the ever-growing content on these applications, there is significant variability and quality of material available, which can lead to the dissemination of misinformation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the abundance, characteristics and risks posed by microplastics in the Zandvlei Catchment and Estuary in Cape Town, South Africa. Water and sediment were sampled between 2019 and 2021, during wet and dry seasons, MPs extracted and identified using microscopy and fourier-transformed infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) analyses.

We present a case of a 42-year-old woman with insignificant history presenting with ISP who underwent exploratory laparoscopy and thorough diagnostic workup that was ultimately unrevealing. This case report adds to the existing literature of ISP, and the authors recommend initiating a multi-institutional database to improve our understanding of ISP and contribute to developing consensus guidelines for presumed ISP.

With myriad of high computing resources, and improved modelling algorithms, there has been a high-speed in the drug development cycle with promising success rate compared to the traditional route. For example, lapatinib; a well-known anticancer drug with clinical applications was discovered with computational drug design techniques.

The characteristics and concentrations of MPs in coastal water, sediment and biota (mussels, whelks and sea urchins) were measured in summer (2020/2021) (dry season) and winter (2021) (wet season) from three sites (Camps Bay, Mouille Point and Three Anchor Bay) in Cape Town. MPs were characterised visually using a stereo microscope and chemically using spectroscopy.

Materials And Methods: For this descriptive cross-sectional study, a concurrent mixed method was employed (qualitative and quantitative method) using a convenience sampling technique. Data were obtained from one hundred and ten (110) staff nurses practicing with the National Health Service via a validated semi-structured questionnaire and in-depth interview.
Plastic debris is accumulating in all environments globally and South Africa's poor waste management plan has led to an increase in plastic contamination throughout the country. Information about microplastics (MPs) in urban and rural coastal environments in South Africa is poor. The aim of this study was to determine coastal MP concentrations in water (particles/L) and sediment (particles/kg).

ECs maintain endothelium integrity by controlling the constriction and relaxation of the vasculature, blood fluidity, adhesion, and migration. These actions of ECs are efficiently coordinated via an intricate signaling network connecting receptors, and a wide range of cellular macromolecules.

Water and mussel MP samples were analyzed at 3 sites in CTH and TOA, respectively. Microplastics were mainly filamentous, black/grey and 1000-2000 μm in size.

The intracellular regulation of the primary nociceptive signal is an area of active study. We report here the discovery of a Gβ5-dependent regulatory pathway within mechanical nociceptors that restrains antinociceptive input from metabotropic GABA-B receptors.

In this study, the potential of CeO-NPs as stress suppressants for cadmium (Cd)-stressed okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) plants was investigated, using two cycles of foliar application of CeO-NPs at 200, 400, and 600 mg/l. Compared to untreated stressed plants, Cd-stressed plants treated with CeO-NPs presented higher pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids).

Bacteriophages (phages), as natural antibacterial agents, are being rediscovered because of the growing threat of multi- and pan-drug-resistant bacterial pathogens globally. However, with an estimated 10 phages on the planet, finding the right phage to recognize a specific bacterial host is like looking for a needle in a trillion haystacks. The host range of a phage is primarily determined by phage tail fibers (or spikes), which initially mediate reversible and specific recognition and adsorption by susceptible bacteria.

Both the viruses are closely related and have similarities with other flaviviruses. Dengue virus (DENV) causes a severe febrile illness with fever, joint pain, and rash leading to a life-threatening condition in severe cases.

However, due to restrictions in reporting and collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) demographic data, comprehensive studies of surgical disparities in the LGBTQ+ population are limited. This review aims to summarize the existing literature describing surgical disparities in LGBTQ+ patients and to identify areas of surgical care in which further studies are warranted.

The upper Cretaceous Lokoja Formation is the earliest deposited stratigraphic unit in the intracratonic Bida Basin, Nigeria. It consists predominantly of sandstone and offers a potential hydrocarbon reservoir in the basin. In this study, we investigated the bulk elemental (major, trace and rare earth elements) and mineralogical compositions of the sandstones for the determination of their compositional maturity, tectonic setting, source and weathering history.

This study used conventional culturing and 16S rRNA metagenomics analyses to assess the diversity of bacterial communities in sediment samples obtained from the Berg River, Western Cape, South Africa. Samples were collected from six points: a residential and recreational area, an industrial area, an informal residential settlement, a point next to a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a pumping station, and a residential and agricultural farming area along the river. High bacterial counts recorded on general selective and differential culture media signify substantial microbial contamination along the sampling sites.
