Background: Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with increased complications and worse outcomes in a variety of surgical diseases, however, SMI as a risk factor in thoracic surgery patients is incompletely understood. We aimed to investigate if comorbid SMI would impact mortality and morbidity following lung cancer resection.

Methods: We identified 615 patients from the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) database at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (January 2013-June 2021) who underwent lung cancer resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Plastic pollution is an ever-increasing threat globally and poor waste management in South Africa has caused an increase in plastic leakage into the environment. Plastic waste in the environment are categorized according to size and plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size are regarded as microplastics (MPs), and little to no research has been done on MPs pollution within the marine coastal environment and rocky shores in South Africa. Sampling was done in February 2020 at a rocky shore within Simon's Town Marina, Cape Town.

To overcome such potential restriction, we developed a gene-constrained analytical method that considers only moderate- and high-risk variants that affect gene coding sequences.

Microplastic (MP) (plastic <5 mm) pollution in South Africa is widespread but few studies have been done in catchments and estuaries of the country. The aim of this study was to investigate the abundance, characteristics and risks posed by microplastics in the Zandvlei Catchment and Estuary in Cape Town, South Africa. Water and sediment were sampled between 2019 and 2021, during wet and dry seasons, MPs extracted and identified using microscopy and fourier-transformed infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) analyses.

Idiopathic Spontaneous Pneumoperitoneum and Call for a Multi-Institutional Database.

Idiopathic spontaneous pneumoperitoneum (ISP) refers to intraperitoneal air of unknown origin when other more common etiologies such as traumatic, intrathoracic, and gynecologic etiologies have been excluded. We present a case of a 42-year-old woman with insignificant history presenting with ISP who underwent exploratory laparoscopy and thorough diagnostic workup that was ultimately unrevealing. This case report adds to the existing literature of ISP, and the authors recommend initiating a multi-institutional database to improve our understanding of ISP and contribute to developing consensus guidelines for presumed ISP.

Stormwater outlets: A source of microplastics in coastal zones of Cape Town, South Africa.

The runoff from stormwater outlets are potential sources of microplastics (MPs) in coastal zones. The characteristics and concentrations of MPs in coastal water, sediment and biota (mussels, whelks and sea urchins) were measured in summer (2020/2021) (dry season) and winter (2021) (wet season) from three sites (Camps Bay, Mouille Point and Three Anchor Bay) in Cape Town. MPs were characterised visually using a stereo microscope and chemically using spectroscopy.

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Microplastics in Water and Mussels Sampled from Cape Town Harbour and Two Oceans Aquarium, South Africa.

The aim of this study was to measure the characteristics and risk assessment of microplastics (MPs) in Cape Town Harbour (CTH) and the Two Oceans Aquarium (TOA) in Cape Town, South Africa from 2018 to 2020. Water and mussel MP samples were analyzed at 3 sites in CTH and TOA, respectively. Microplastics were mainly filamentous, black/grey and 1000-2000 μm in size.

We report here the discovery of a Gβ5-dependent regulatory pathway within mechanical nociceptors that restrains antinociceptive input from metabotropic GABA-B receptors.

Foliar application of nanoceria attenuated cadmium stress in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.).

Foliar application of nanoparticles (NPs) as a means for ameliorating abiotic stress is increasingly employed in crop production. In this study, the potential of CeO-NPs as stress suppressants for cadmium (Cd)-stressed okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) plants was investigated, using two cycles of foliar application of CeO-NPs at 200, 400, and 600 mg/l. Compared to untreated stressed plants, Cd-stressed plants treated with CeO-NPs presented higher pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids).

Surgical Implications of LGBTQ+ Health Disparities: A Review.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) patients face challenging health care disparities. However, due to restrictions in reporting and collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) demographic data, comprehensive studies of surgical disparities in the LGBTQ+ population are limited. This review aims to summarize the existing literature describing surgical disparities in LGBTQ+ patients and to identify areas of surgical care in which further studies are warranted.

Concentrations and risk assessment of metals and microplastics from antifouling paint particles in the coastal sediment of a marina in Simon's Town, South Africa.

Maintenance of maritime vessels includes the removal of paint from hulls that are sources of metals, antifouling paint particles (APPs) and microplastics (MPs) that end up in the coastal environment. Simon's Town is a small urban town in False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, where maritime activities take place (there is a naval harbour, marina and shipyard). The aim of this study was to measure metals, APPs and MPs in Simon's Town, to assess the impact of maritime activities and a storm water pipe in a sheltered marina.

Surgery Acting Internship Individual Learning Plans: Fostering Mentorship in the COVID-19 Era.

Objective: Mentorship facilitates successful matching for surgical specialties. A formal mentorship plan may counteract restricted mentorship opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design: We surveyed medical students applying to surgery specialties who participated in our formalized mentorship program (M) and those of a prior cohort who were informally mentored (M).

Mineralogy and geochemistry of the sandstone facies of Campanian Lokoja formation in the Southern Bida basin, Nigeria: implications for provenance and weathering history.

The upper Cretaceous Lokoja Formation is the earliest deposited stratigraphic unit in the intracratonic Bida Basin, Nigeria. It consists predominantly of sandstone and offers a potential hydrocarbon reservoir in the basin. In this study, we investigated the bulk elemental (major, trace and rare earth elements) and mineralogical compositions of the sandstones for the determination of their compositional maturity, tectonic setting, source and weathering history.

Interviewing For Residency as an LGBTQ+ Applicant: Compounded Problems With Virtual Interviewing.

Applying to and interviewing for residency positions can be challenging tasks for LGBTQ+ applicants. Resident and faculty surgeons have expressed challenges in disclosing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity throughout the recruitment process. Discrimination and lack of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the recruitment process may have been exacerbated by virtual interviews in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Machine learning principles applied to CT radiomics to predict mucinous pancreatic cysts.

Purpose: Current diagnostic and treatment modalities for pancreatic cysts (PCs) are invasive and are associated with patient morbidity. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate machine learning algorithms to delineate mucinous from non-mucinous PCs using non-invasive CT-based radiomics.

Methods: A retrospective, single-institution analysis of patients with non-pseudocystic PCs, contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans within 1 year of resection, and available surgical pathology were included.

Investigation into the bacterial diversity of sediment samples obtained from Berg River, Western Cape, South Africa.

This study used conventional culturing and 16S rRNA metagenomics analyses to assess the diversity of bacterial communities in sediment samples obtained from the Berg River, Western Cape, South Africa. Samples were collected from six points: a residential and recreational area, an industrial area, an informal residential settlement, a point next to a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a pumping station, and a residential and agricultural farming area along the river. High bacterial counts recorded on general selective and differential culture media signify substantial microbial contamination along the sampling sites.

This study investigated the occurrence of microplastics in mussels sold at supermarkets and wholesalers in Cape Town, South Africa. Soft tissue was extracted from mussels, digested and identified by microscopy and FTIR-ATR.
