Lower limb osteoarthritis (OA) often generates musculoskeletal pain causing functional impairment and decreasing mobility, autonomy, and quality of life. Patients with OA are commonly prescribed specific care for total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty (THA or TKA), when patients present symptoms that are refractory to nondrug treatments. Currently, when patients are discharged from orthopedic surgery, they are either referred to a rehabilitation department, or sent directly home with assistance such as remote monitoring by teleconsultation or a mobile application.

Previous research has suggested that supervising automation can lead to a decrease in human performance, especially when automation is not totally reliable. Providing context-related information about reliability can help operators to better adjust their behaviour in a human-automation interaction context. However, previous studies have not specified the level of accuracy that this information should provide to the human operator.

Article Synopsis
  • - Psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia are prevalent among people who use drugs (PWUD), making medication adherence difficult, especially for those with co-occurring addictions.
  • - A case study from a supervised drug consumption facility in Paris showed that administering penfluridol, a long-acting antipsychotic, helped a patient with schizophrenia and multiple drug dependencies.
  • - Penfluridol not only improved the patient's psychotic symptoms but also enhanced their participation in addiction care and stability in the "Housing First" program, demonstrating its potential role in harm reduction strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • People who inject drugs (PWID) in Georgia, where hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence is high, were studied to assess their adherence to treatment and outcomes.
  • An observational study found that 98% of the 244 participants completed their treatment, and 84.8% achieved sustained virologic response (SVR), with adherence being a key factor in success.
  • The study concludes that with peer support and a simple treatment regimen, PWID can achieve good treatment outcomes, showing that concerns about adherence may be overstated.

A seminal work by Sheridan and Verplank depicted 10 levels of automation, ranging from no automation to an automation that acts completely autonomously without human support. These levels of automation were later complemented with a four-stage model of human information processing. Next, human-machine cooperation centred models and associated cooperation modes were introduced.

Early onset of heroin use is a severity marker of heroin use disorder. We studied the interaction between early onset and rapid transition to heroin dependence recorded with retrospective interviews in 213 patients with severe heroin dependence and history of methadone maintenance treatment. General linear models were used to identify independent factors associated with early onset, factors associated with rapid transition to dependence, and a multivariate model was used to study the interaction of those two dimensions.

We wanted to determine the diagnostic performance of a rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) used bedside in a pediatric emergency department (PED). This was a prospective study over four consecutive winters (2009-2013), comparing the results of a RIDT (QuickVue®) with RT-PCR in children admitted to a PED. Among the 764 children included, we did not observe any significant differences in the diagnostic performance of RIDT except during the H1N1 pandemic.

The authors report 3 cases of food poisoning, one of them leading to a swift death, which they were able to observe on 1st January 1978 in the Drôme (France). They explain how burbot was the suspected food responsible for the auto-intoxication and how the X ray examination of the vertebrae of this fish allowed them to support the diagnosis of "tetrodonic" poisoning; the inquest did not allow to state precisely where the fish was caught. With regard to these French cases the authors point out that this type of pathology is made possible by the increasing importing of fish from tropical regions, in powder form or frozen products.
